The federal government posted its largest monthly deficit in history in February at $223 billion, according to preliminary numbers the Congressional Budget Office released Monday morning.
That figure tops last Februarys record of $220.9 billion, and marks the 29th straight month the government has run in the red a modern record. The last time the federal government posted even a monthly surplus was September 2008, just before the financial collapse.
Last months federal deficit is nearly four times as large as the spending cuts House Republicans have passed in their spending bill, and is more than 30 times the size of Senate Democrats opening bid of $6 billion.

Obama is an idiot!
Add and ‘s’ to the beginning of that lift mfg. name, and you’ve got Bamster to a T!
And yes, I know how to spell schuyster.
Yes, but with a lot of effort, we may be able to cut $2B a month. That would help.
Right?

Yeah, those Republicans sure are gonna save us from Obammy and those rascally Democrats.
Wonder if the name on the pallet jack refers to Obama?.
Neither party is serious about getting our spending under control.
This snowball is growing at a rate that cannot be sustained. If we’re not talking a year or two, then it’s a matter of months.
I am so disgusted with Washington, D. C. right now, I could spit nails.
You aren’t the only one!
The ENTIRE Yealy deficit for 2007 was 160 Billion, less than then the 1 month deficit in Feb ‘11? Something is f-ed up.
The entire deficit of the Bush Administration was something like $4.75 trillion, perhaps a bit more.
Obama is effectively blowing out our deficits at just a little under half that per month, and the Republicans are only talking about cutting something like $8.5 trillion per month.
It just boggles the mind how out of control our government spending is.
We’ve got a great set of founding documents, and not a single one of our elected officials pay any attention to them as they buy into destroying that shining light on a hill.
All the news reports and talk show hosts need to introduce every budget and/or deficit propaganda story with..., Remember our hypothetical guy Uncle Sammy?” “He’s that guy who makes $3,333 per paycheck but spends $5,721. Well, it’s been widely reported that everyone in Washington agrees it’s high time for Uncle Sammy to sacrifice. “Last week, President Obama and Congress finally hammered out an agreement that starting real soon, Uncle Sammy will slash his expenses by $6.20 every paycheck!!” “Thats right, every time Uncle Sammy gets his $3,333 paycheck, he promises to only spend $5,714.80. He is promising to do this for the entire year.
How many households or businesses are stupid enough to operate this way. Yet, even our tough newly elected Washington folks stand in front of the camera and smile with accomplishment while reporting $4 Billion in cuts with a straight face.
The GOP however, is being really tough. They want $57 Billion more in cuts(thats right - they think Uncle Sammy should cough up another $88.27 per paycheck), but the Dems are saying that even if they could agree to $6 Billion more ($3.10), it would be devastating, much less another $88.27.
All the hundreds of Trillion Billions get hard to relate to. If Ive done the math correctly, the numbers above though, are exactly how it translates for the average chump like you and me who pay Uncle Sammy’s monthly bills!!!
Maybe we need to force every conversation about budget and deficit to revole around the life of hypothetical Uncle Sammy and his average job and his bloated spending problem. Maybe the dialogue needs to be in USU’s (Uncle Sammy Units) rather than Billions and Trillions!!!
Maybe we should even think of Uncle Sammy as a guy who is unemployed but gets $3,333 in cash doled out by concerned family members every month. Then, the minute he gets $3,333, he wildly spends $5,721. $4 Billion, $10 Billion, $61 Billion, in terms of fixing the problem, what’s the difference!!!!
I agree it is out of control but your figures are off by a factor of 10.
