(CNN) -- Two additional suspects have surfaced in the fatal shooting of an American man on a lake that straddles the United States and Mexico last September, Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez told CNN.

David Hartley was allegedly shot on the Mexican side of Falcon Lake. He and his wife, Tiffany, were on personal watercraft on the lake when gunmen opened fire on them, authorities say. The killing remains unsolved.

Gonzalez said officials would not release the new suspects' names.

Gov. Rick Perry said Monday he’s disheartened that the wife of a missing American who was reported shot by pirates on a Texas-Mexico border lake hasn’t heard from U.S. federal officials.

Mexican authorities have not publicly provided any new leads since the investigator on the case was found dead.

OK, who wants to be next in the wood chipper?

I'm sure all the FReepers who were lining up to trash the wife will be here to apologize any moment now.

I believe those all-knowing FReepers deserve a ping.

Dereliction of duty = grounds for impeachment. I've had (more than) enough.

They went over to the Mexican side of the lake and the drug gangs shot at them as they were headed back to the U.S. side. Had the wife been just a little slower both would be dead.

You gotta be kidding me. Apologize for what? The article gives no information at all. Allegedly, some unknown informants gave some names to this goofy sheriff. It doesn’t even appear anybody is in custody- the sheriff just has some names. But Barney Fife is waiting for them to show up so he can grab them- and he announces it to the world. Let me see if I got this straight. Some unnamed drug cartel guy gave orders to kill this couple but they somehow managed to miss getting the wife. Huh? I wonder if this is some ploy on the part of the sheriff to entrap the wife.

We can only go on the information available...

"We understand that they were there, they participated in the shooting. They were given the orders to go kill (Tiffany) also," the sheriff said."

You think she gave the order to have herself killed?

Read the article. Allegedly, the information is being supplied by some unnamed informants. Who knows if they’re just trying to frame some member of another cartel or if they’re motivated by a monetary reward or if they’re the killers hired by the wife. And come on. Is any sheriff stupid enough to announce to the world he knows who the killers are and he’s just waiting for them to cross the border so he can arrest them?

I did read the article, lol. When this happened, and even now, my stance has been that there really isn't a lot of public information out there. The preponderance of what is out there suggests that the wife's story is more or less true. Does that mean she couldn't have done it? Of course not, but it seems to grow increasingly unlikely. My point is how many jumped on her from the beginning in spite of the dearth of information, the overall level of violence on the border, prior incidents on the lake, and even some corroboration from what is by all available info, an independent witness.

I don't recall whether or not you were one who rushed to such judgment, but if the shoe fits wear it. I will tell you this...if this was all an elaborate ruse she shrewdly executed to ditch her husband, I'll be perfectly happy to jump back on here and acknowledge my suspicions were wrong. I simply wonder how many who have already adjudicated against her in their minds will be willing to do the same if it turns out otherwise...

“Mexican authorities are not about to lock up these killers because they fear being killed themselves , Obama is trying his best to make our own law enforcement just as good as theirs, /s/”

Yes, we even have the BATF supplying these murderers with guns! Operation “fast and furious”....only the agenda driven ATF directors/criminals would think of such a lawless tactic.

And I can’t believe I’m watching a report this very second on fox with some other government liar telling how the problem is the guns coming from the United States. (That’s code for “we need to get rid of the second amendment”)

sorry about the rant:

Yep, I was definitely one of those who found her story a tad bit implausible. I actually believed her husband was never with her on the jet skis. I theorized he was still alive and hiding out in Mexico and the whole thing was an insurance scam. That’s what’s so great about Free Republic for me. I read a story like this and then, using my best detective skills, try to figure out what happened. Sometimes I’m right and sometimes I’m wrong. But damn it, it’s fun to try. It’s not like I’m on the jury or anything.

Don’t you think that we have an ethical obligation to reserve judgment until we have enough credible information to make a reasonable assumption, and then treat it like an assumption - particularly in a case where one is accusing someone of murdering their spouse? You make it sound like a game.

I admit I was a bit disgusted by all the leaping to conclusions without facts to base them on. Especially by those who have never been to the area and don’t understand what the Texas-Mexico/Falcon Lake area is like.

Then no one should question OBama’s policies or the union members in Wisconsin or the Nazi loving Christian Dior designer, or the cops who gunned down a man outside a Costco in Las Vegas last year, or the stripper at Duke. Heck, if you really want to be safe, wait til Judgment day. Seriously, that’s why it called “Free” Republic. You’re free to posit a theory on any story or article posted. Hey, I’m not demanding the woman be executed. I’m just having some fun trying to figure out what could have happened. I’m not a cop or prosecutor or juror. My opinion is nothing more than my opinion. Heck, if you disagree with me, you’re free to say so. And, if it turns out I’m wrong, you can chastise and denounce me unmercifully. I’m a big boy. I can take it.
