"The fact is that Democrats stand ready to meet the Republicans halfway on this. That would be fair."
-- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), March 3, 2011
"We are also prepared to put out specifics that will move another over $6 billion closer -- so that we will have met them halfway -- essentially split the difference between the president's request and [the GOP cuts in] H.R. 1."
-- Gene B. Sperling, director of the White House National Economic Council, March 3, 2011
"We have met them halfway, which in many ways is a perfect definition of an attempt to compromise."
-- White House press secretary Jay Carney, March 2, 2011
This has become a constant refrain by Democrats -- that they have already gone some distance to accommodate the Republicans' efforts to cut federal spending. We already awarded Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) two Pinocchios for this claim, but the talking point keeps popping up again and again.
We take no position on whether it makes sense to make these cuts at this time. But Democrats are being disingenuous by suggesting they have already worked hard to reduce spending or to reach out to Republicans.

Hell both have told so many whoppers, you would think they were burger king.
Why keep using the fancy word “disingenuous”? Let’s call it what it is - - a freakin’ LIE!
More evidence that Democrats think most people are really stupid. How else could they present money that was supposed to be budgeted but never was as a cut? The mind boggles.
bump
It only works because of the Democrat controlled Press.
Grab a liberal by the throat and squeeze. Ask them if you stop when only one eye pops out if that’s meeting them half way?
Who do we have negotiating for "US"... POLLY-ANNA?.. Dorothy and ToTo?.. Neville Chamberlain?..
"We" have overwhelming numbers in the House of Reps.. Jeeze..
The Unions are jumping the shark like scared mackerals..
I say bleed every last sound bite out of them..
A democrats idea of a budget cut is just change the name of the program.
The Republicans ain’t exactly telling the truth, either. The best they can muster is a 2% cut (primarily with baseline budgeting gimmicks) when Federal spending has increased by 25% in the past two years.....
You're at the back of the bus now for a REASON: we don't want your Progressive Agenda, and we want to de-fund ALL your past spending on it, too.
You are going to be cut off from past over-spending and un-Constitutional over-reach.
There is a 1.6 Trillion dollar deficit. 61 Billion proposed by the house is a rounding error.
Call these rat bastards and ridicule them!
Time to throw down the gauntlet. Pick one department and completely defund it. I suggest the Department of Labor would be a good place to start. The 2011 continuing resolution for the department totals $148.5 billion. Assuming half of the budget has already been spent, we can save $70 billion or more by killing the department next year. Other irrelevant departments deserving similar treatment include: Commerce, Agriculture, Education, HUD, Energy, and much of HHS.
The Republicans should be going after spending the same way Obama, Pelosi and Reid went after health care last year. Aim big and damn the torpedos.
True.. would take a speaker wrapped a little tighter than Boehner tho.. the boy has a weak comb over..
Nancy, you are a lying ditch, ugly and your mother dresses you funny.
Halfway on a budget amount that never existed?
Sane people DO NOT consider a reduced planned increase a cut.
Bears repeating...
Dear Republicans...
AIM REALLY BIGGER AND FULL SPEED AHEAD!
At least a 2 trillion$ reduction, then maybe meet them halfway.
Yeah, but it is really they side who is dumb. The left buys anything the rats present to them hook line and sinker.
We know better, don’t we?
The WaPo done figgered it out. Halledamnlujah.
Yeah, that surprised me too
