Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has privately assured President Obama that House Republicans will not attack him if he makes a proposal to reform entitlement spending, according to sources familiar with the offer.
Moreover, Boehner has personally promised Obama that he will stand side-by-side with him to weather the strong political backlash expected from any proposal to cut entitlement costs.

Will they never learn?!
Any chance of a primary challenge against Bohner in 2012?? You know, a real Conservative with a real backbone??
Will they never learn?!
Even if the report is true, Obama is not going to offer any cut to the budget of any kind.
Zero will NEVER reform entitlement spending.... it’s literally the bread and butter of his constituency.
Do you honestly think the Obozo is EVER going to propose cutting entitlements? He knows it would be the end of his re-election fantasy. Boehner did the smart thing, here: now he can go out and say that even though he promised Obozo that the GOP would assist in entitlement reform, Obozo didn’t have the guts to tackle a big issue like that.
Good move. This is serious. Boehner’s tactic must be used or it won’t get done, and this time it must get done.
Precisely. Which is why Boehner's offer is an invitation for Obama to commit political suicide.
Brilliant move.
Just remember that the Republican Congress passed welfare reform and Bill Clinton got the credit.
If they will have some entitlement reform, Obama will take the credit, if it backfires,he can blame it all on the Republicans.
This is a win-win for Obama and a lose-lose for the GOP.
Never going to happen.
And I'd like to know where the writer got his information, if this was a 'private' meeting, between Boehner and the President.
Amen. I think Boner has the right idea. Cuts must be made. Who cares how they do it. I think in the end the GOP leader to get this done will get credit for doing the hard work.
I just heard tonight that Speaker Boehner does not want Mr. Buckles, our last veteran of WWI, who just died at 110, to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda. He said Arlington Cemetary ceremony is enough. I feel that honoring him as the last veteran, honors all our WWI defenders, as well as all our soldiers who have died. For such a memorable end, I think that ceremonies at both locations might be appropriate. Furthermore, many who would be likely to want to honor him are probably elderly so it would be better in the Rotunda, in cold March weather. I am not aware of any large building at Arlington. If you feel strongly about this you can call Congress at 202-CA4-3121 and ask the operator for Mr. Boehner, or the representative most likely to listen to you.
Not to worry, Obama will not offer significant reform...unless it’s to raise revenue. Boner didn’t take any big risk here:)
What is wrong with this? When did we become the protectors of entitlements? I do not think Boehner is naive. If he is and he is going to hold fire so the President who has did so much in such a little time to send our financial situation on a rocket-ship into the abyss then he deserves to be replaced. This isn’t a time for games. Approaching quickly is a singular moment in time where we will have the opportunity to destroy the political future of this leftist monstrosity and his minions. If Boehner isn’t capable or willing of leading the charge as opportunities present themselves then he needs to step down. I really don’t understand what all the hand wringing is about. A majority of the citizenry clearly accept the idea that government must be cut. Let’s bring them on board. The American private sector worker has suffered and our economy has faltered it is time to bring down the size of government to a sustainable level. It is not fair to pretend that everything can go on as is with more pie in the sky promises and entitlements paid for with the futures of our children. The piper has been paid enough, now is the time to take his pipe away.
Boehner's not naive.
He knows Obama has no interest in taking the lead and is going to wait for the House go first on entitlements. Which they will be doing sometime in April -- when they present their proposed FY2012 budget.
Boehner has now established that he invited the President's leadership on the matter and offered his full support.
If the President fails to show leadership -- as he will -- and resists every possible entitlement cut -- as he will -- it will be the President that is not taking the deficit seriously.
Note also that the Democrat Senate has bowed out of these negotiations (the House is negotiating direct with the White House). Could it be the Democrat Senate is now distancing itself from the President -- not wanting to be taken down with him?
you believe eveything that is written in “the hill”, I take it with a grain of salt, and watch what they all do
Right. Boehner will stand up there like a jerk, almost nothing will be cut, and then the rats will go on and on about how the pubs are making all these drastic cuts, kids will starve, granny will be tossed out of her home, schools and hospitals will shut down......in other words.....social armageddon caused by the GOP. Boehner will stand there like the stooge he is and let the GOP be hammered for it. The rats’ obvious purpose is to undermine the House pubs so they can get it back in two years.
I have just about lost all hope. These people we elect just can’t do the job. They’re so damned dim-witted and politically retarded, it really is hopeless. You could roll ALL of them together and still not be able to muster one solid set of cojones or two fully firing brain cells.
Dream on.
Orrin Hatch was telling today about the 40 to over 100 Billion in fraud each year - just in this one program.
As for Social Security and medicaid - go after the tens of thousands of lazy-a*s druggie/bi-polars/alcoholics and ‘recovering’ ones who are able bodied but pulling and average of $900 a month PLUS 100% medical/drug/counseling paid for!
People who worked - AND PAID IN - from age 15 to 65 - that's PRE-PAID - still get $100+ taken out of their SS for medicare, plus a yearly premium, plus 20%, plus SS doesn't cover office visits or counseling.
And there's been no cost of living adjustment for 2 years, and it's frozen through next year, at least, also.
Dump the REAL free-loaders and go after the fraud.
Pay back the trillions embezzled BY THE GOVERNMENT to SS., and it will be solvent.
Stop calling Social Security, something pre-paid into for 50 years, an ‘entitlement program’. It actually is, in that the people paid all their lives are entitled to what the gov’t ‘contract’ was.
The lazy scre* ups aren't. I heard one of the drug/alcohol ‘dependent’ (even though she's been ‘clean for 5 years and perfectly able to work, complain that medicare doesn't cover dental too!)Don't come after senior citizens to make up for fraud and lazy a*ses.
