SPRINGFIELD, Ill. The Illinois attorney general says state police must release the name of everyone in the state who is authorized to own a gun.
Illinois state police determine who gets a Firearm Owners Identification card, which allows people to own guns. The police have always kept the list private.
But Attorney General Lisa Madigan's public access counselor released a letter Monday night saying the information should be public.

Publish the names and addresses of every member of every police department in Illinois at the same time.
*IL Ping*
Other than that, there is no "right to privacy."
I’m wondering how many gun-banning politicians will be found on that permit list?
I could go along with this if the state provides a gun to each and EVERY member of the civilian militia. By publishing such a list, they would be “blowing my cover” of maybe having a gun, but not actually having one.
The state should release the name and address of every person in the state that is a member of a public employee union.
Um, NO! Actually, HELL NO! Actually, the FOID needs to be abolished entirely. A card that shows who owns a firearem is a violation of the 2nd Amendment.
Sure, easy as pie.
List every man and woman in the state, over the age of 18 who doesn't have a Felony conviction.
Just because Sissy Jo is 'authorized' to own a shotgun, doesn't mean she has one.
List should have addresses and be titled, “Homes you should NOT invade.” My residence in IL has an NRA sticker on the front door. I consider it a bit more direct than my home security system sign.
Oh, boy.....
There are bills currently being brought up in the legislative process concerning "carry rights", hate to say it but they are all D.O.A.
We have a rat House, a rat Senate and a rat Governor and that's just the way it is. Call me defeatist if you want, I call it realism, having lived in this rat machine controlled state for more than 40 years.
If Crook County didn't count in elections we would be one of the reddest states in the country.
That B&*$&% has no right to know who legally posses a FOID card. That is none of her damn business.
Why don't you prosecute the gang bangers Lisa and leave the rest of us law abiding citizens alone.
I say let’s use the dem tactics and have our senators flee to Indiana or Missouri since it is closer to Springfield. Then
Quinn and his gang of thugs can quit their dismantling of this once a great state. I am ashamed to live here.
The card doesn't actually tell you who owns a fire arm but simply who the state says can own one.
I'm certain that all the gang bangers in Chicago comply with this law, being the fine upstanding citizens they are.
R2/CW2
This could seriously backfire on the liberals. Just cross-check violent criminals against those who have a FOID card, and when it ends up that none of the violent criminals have FOID cards, it will be clear that law-abiding FOID card holders are not the problem.
SOOOOOOO damned glad I don’t live in IL anymore.
Illinois State Rifle Association Asks Attorney General Madigan to Reconsider Ruling on Information Release
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., March 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
The ISRA is asking Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan to reconsider a ruling handed down today that directs the Illinois State Police to release the names and other personal information belonging to the state’s 1.3 Million firearm owners. The ruling comes in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request filed by news organizations who wish to list the names of firearm owners in newspapers and other publications.
Information subject to the FOI request is maintained in the Firearm Owners Identification card (FOID) database which tracks personal information belonging to persons who hold FOID cards. Since its inception in the mid-1960s, information in the FOID database has been considered confidential and not subject to release by the State Police. Today’s ruling by Attorney General Madigan is a dramatic departure from that tradition.
The ISRA strongly opposes release of the FOID database information because the association believes that release of such data puts FOID card holders and their families in grave danger.
“Attorney General Madigan has to understand that the safety of real people is at stake here,” commented ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. “Once this information is released, it will be distributed to street gangs and gun control groups who will use the data to target gun owners for crime and harassment.”
“There is no legitimate reason for anyone to have access to the information in the FOID database,” continued Pearson. “Make no mistake, the ISRA would love to have the FOID database for our recruitment and fundraising drives. However, we understand how important it is to maintain the privacy of citizens who choose to exercise their right to keep and bear arms. So again, I’m asking that Attorney General Madigan consider the families that will be endangered by the release of the FOID database and then honor tradition by keeping the information private.”
The ISRA is the state’s leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of millions of law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
