Reuters) - Wisconsin's Republican Gov. Scott Walker said on Monday that absent senate Democrats have 24 hours to return and vote on a measure to reduce the power of public sector unions or the state will miss out on opportunity to refinance its debt.
"Now they have one day to return to work before the state loses out on the chance to refinance debt, saving taxpayers $165 million this fiscal year," Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie said in a statement.
"Failure to return to work and cast their votes will lead to more painful and aggressive spending cuts in the very near future," the statement said.
Walker's budget proposal has sparked nationwide protests from labor unions who fear it could be a harbinger of things to come in other states. To balance the state's budget, Walker wants to require public sector employees to pay more for pensions and health care, and to strip their unions of bargaining rights except for wages up to the rate of inflation.

This is what a Baltimore website has to say: There are some serious discussions going on the comments. Here are a couple of the not so nice comments. I can only imagine what Mike Turbin meant when he said ‘there’s hate in their eyes’.

Republicans & Fox news should be punched in the face. Murdoch & his anti labor bunch @ Fox should also be kicked in the nuts also.

Union man
...... You are just an ignorant under educated hopeless peasant who will allways be at the bottom because, you insist on dragging everyone else down to where you are rather than try to boost everyone where you want to be. You know very well that if you could negotiate you own wages and benefits that you would and to a tune of great portions. Be real and, stop hating!

I believe it's called RECALL (as in to fire).
I thought somebody last week had posted that their BIL(?) was working with Walker’s people to see what the legal options are regarding calling the seats vacant, and last Thursday was the tipping point. After last Thursday the seats would have been vacant long enough that the governor could declare them vacant and begin the process of an election to replace them.
Am I remembering right?
The problem of placing the blame on the democrats is made impossible by the lack of any non-partisan media outlet, print or video, in the “Fairyland of the Dairyland”, Madison.
I was born and raised in Madison and escaped in 1987.
EODGUY
Return in 24 hours OR WHAT??
Governor is playing chess while the dems are playing checkers.
Governor Walker, this would be a good oppurtunity to get rid of the dead weight liberal worthless teachers and hire conservatives to take their place once the budget is balanced.
Let me get this straight....
Gov Walker says to the dems:
“Come back now, or the state spends more money!”
I wonder if they laughed out loud or just split an ear to ear grinch grin?
[By the WI Constitution the governor can call special elections for vacant seats...]
He should do it immediately and though their would be trouble, I beleive the right can defeat the left in a fistfight.
True, but they only need one more seat to make quorum for voting. A long shot but American conservatives would respect him and the evil left fear and hate him, a good thing indeed.
Let the punishment be this:
A Senator remaining truant more than three (3) days in violation of the compulsory attendance requirement shall be deemed to have vacated their elected office, their seat shall be declared vacant, and a replacement shall be determined by Special Election.
Said former Senator's pay shall be paid on a pro rata basis only for days served during the calendar year, the Senator's benefit agreements shall be deemed null and void on the basis of the Senator's failure to failure to meet contractual obligations, and all continuing benefits otherwise enjoyed by former Senate officeholders shall be terminated.
Line in the sand! I’m lovin’ this guy!
At least in WI and OH they cannot win...there is no money to win and absolutely Z E R O chance either state will increase taxes.
The ONLY choice the unions have is to accept all concessions or see the lay-off of thousands of their brother and sisters lol
Of course, a real conservative prefers to see the layoffs.
And, these layoffs won't just stop at the state level...whether it be WI, or OH or CA or NY.
All are cutting enormous monies...enormous...to counties and cities further down the line.
Yessiree, the next big bubble pops when Podunk goes t!tts up. Unlike real estate CDO's EVERYBODY is invested in Podunk. Everybody.
E S P E C I A L L Y Public Employees.
It happened in Texas several years ago. Democrats again. Can’t recall off-hand what the results were, but they looked like complete fools.
This is clearly taking the state of Wisconsin to a State Constitutional Crisis.
If there is no State Sup.Ct remedy, then the GOP will have to hit them in the head with a Political Anvil. The Dems figure they have the press so they have a shot.
Every Executive dig the Gov. has should be used...firstly, throwing the whole lot of them out on their asses.
No way, do they have a permit to protest INSIDE the State Capitol.
If they refuse to come back and vote, simply cut another $165 from entitlement programs.
These unions are abusive state hijacking thugs, it sad but politically we may have to abandon a few of the Rustbelt states to them. It seems clearly that they must be allowed to suffer and “rust” a lot more before they will be weak enough as to permit their state to kill theses abusive laws and start to recover.
I might even go so far as to suggest we organize Business boycotts of union dominated states. In order to starve the parasite to death!
