My sister who works for Head Start says next Friday is it in CA. They had a meeting today saying they are all gone. She was told it is all closing at least in this state and maybe across the nation at least in part.
Sure, budget issues is the way it goes, but how long before we get more bonds and BS (FOR THE CHILDREN)?
The Los Angeles times in the source link is there to show you they already blamed Republicans even though in this state the Democrats run the show.

Sounds like a typical state agency too.
Probably true in many cases (I think I read an abstract of the study also), but as I've alluded to, our kids' grades are improving each year through elementary school. Much better now than you ever would have thought possible.
The key is that you need followup from the parents and the school system.
These Indians do not seek employment whether government or other so I don't include them in any local work statistic. They have welfare and whatever tribal payment they get from oil, gas or farm leases from their chosen area. Pennies really compared to even a modest job. They live in houses that disinigrate around them while they compete for the worst house move to the top of the federal repair or replace list.
What's horrible and sad is that it takes 8 to 12 years for these dilapidated structures to be fixed. Also there is absolute horror to be put upon any poor dog or cat that these people have. Peta should live on an Indian reservation for one week. If they really cared about animals they would be puking after one hour.
Head Start is a big deal here too. Just a bunch of people hanging out to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.Kids? Oh yeah that's what this is all about.
Phonics were/are used in our local Head Start.
There's nothing to prevent them from actually learning before age 5. We exposed my daughter to reading, and she learned to love reading before she started school. She remained several years ahead of her age group all the way through university.
All without the benefit of "Head Start," or any other government indoctrination program.
It is now called "Collective Salvation" or *snicker* "Restoring the American (Gravy Train) Dream.
Yep. I’m hoping against hope that Wisconsin de-funds 4-year old Kindergarten that our EX-Gov ‘Diamond Jim’ Doyle signed into law as the door was hittin’ him in the @ss on the way OUT last November!
If there’s one person left standing after the relentless mayhem in ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ of these past two weeks, they SHOULD be able to connect the dots between Unions, the Democrats, Election Funding and (lack of) Education in this state!
For a State that touts itself as being so much ‘smarter’ than all the others, we’re really failing on all fronts - our kids can’t read or do simple math, and the taxpayers are BLIND to the dollars that have been sucked out of their pockets for DECADES on end by the Unions! Grrrr!
And if not, they’re a Fool’s Fool...or your basic Democrat voter, LOL!
Good! I have no respect for parent(s) who teach their kids nothing but they’re names.
Or how to use homonyms.
That is a real interesting link!
Well said! When I was working on my doctorate, even one of my rabidly liberal professors conceded that Head Start hasnt worked. Multi-billion dollar boondoggle, pure and simple.
I remember during the VP debate back in 2004 John Edwards went bonkers that Dick Cheney voted against Head Start when he was in Congress. Cheney's stock immediately soared in my house.
I made my kids a hot breakfast everyday, they never once had cold cereal before school, and I made their lunches while they ate breakfast. We actually talked while they ate breakfast. I’m sure I wasn’t the only mother who did that. They’re now 22 and 24 so it’s not like it was the 1950’s. Today, kids pick up their breakfasts in a bag from the gym and eat it at their desks, and they get the most awful “hot” lunches.
Its about time. This has really just been a jobs scheme. If it had any merit, students would be achieving a lot more in their later school years.
It's in many places a welfare deal.
These kids at least in my sister's area are the ones who flunk once they get past the 5th grade.
It is a newer pre pre school program. Wasn’t there until a decade or two ago.
I still remember my big brother teaching me the alphabet, etc.
We were raised by my grandparents on a little farm in the north woods.
When I went off to school - the little one room, one teacher school - “Sub primary - 8th) I was so proud. I knew my ABC's and could write my name.
When we left and moved to the big city - Boston - we were a full year ahead.
He went on to become a specialist in radar, sonic and space engineering, responsible for space stations on the east/west coast and the Altlantic and Pacicifc.
They wanted to visit our home and I told them no. I went to the national site and got some verbiage stating they had to get parental consent. It seemed to shock the administrator that I didn’t capitulate on this. The visits might have become mandatory later.
Delightful! This program is a sham and a waste. the ONLY thing useful it does is that it gives a reasonably safe space to the kids there whose parents happen to be abusive/neglectful.
In which case, if the kids are in danger, they need more than four safe hours a day.
“The justification for Head Start as a federal program was that it would produce life-long improvements in outcome for children from poor families.”
It has been proven not to work.
