Aircraft, cargo ships and fishing boats are moving towards Libya to evacuate Chinese nationals living in the North African country. Tunisian, Turkish and other workers are fleeing the country as well.

Tripoli – China will send a jet, ships and fishing vessels from nearby waters to evacuate some 33,000 Chinese nationals working in violence-torn Libya. The government has set up an emergency unit headed by Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang to coordinate the repatriation of mainlanders, as well as people from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The State Council (cabinet) “decided to immediately deploy chartered civil aircraft, COSCO cargo ships in nearby waters, and Chinese fishing vessels carrying needed living and medical supplies”, the Ministry said.

China will also lease “nearby large-scale passenger cruise ships and buses” to help in the evacuation effort.

A spokesman for China’s Embassy in Libya said dozens of Chinese citizens have been injured since the unrest broke out about a week ago, and 15 of them are now in hospital.

Beijing has also called on Tripoli to ensure the safety of its nationals after hundreds of construction workers in eastern Libya were attacked, robbed and forced to escape on foot towards Tripoli.

“China has made urgent representations to the Libyan side, requiring it to conduct investigations [into the attacks] and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said.

The Chinese are not the only foreigners fleeing the country. Thousands of Tunisians are crossing the border into Tunisia, whilst 3,000 Turks are waiting to be evacuated.

The difference between a competent, if utterly ruthless, government in China and an incompetent and corrupt government in the US. The US is waiting for luxury transport. China is using cargo ships to get their people out any way they can. Obama is indecisive and worried about image. China just wants to get their people out and worry about image later.

China's idea of spin control is that the winner writes history so just do what it takes to win and worry abut the rest later. That doesn't make China a fun place to live. But it does make them one seriously dangerous opponent.

This is interesting because usually China doesn’t give a rat’s rear about losing a couple of thousand people.

There are two obvious reasons. (1) They will need the engineers to start up production again after the riots are over, regardless of who wins. (2) They may not care if they get killed, but a hostage crisis would be very embarrassing. And at the moment China lacks the ability to project power outside the Western Pacific. A bunch of Islamic fanatics holding hostages could ruin the super dragon image they have been carefully building up over the past decade.

Is our gov getting our people out?

In a word, no. Obama has no plan, has moved no assets into position, and hasn't even called on our people to be ready to move out. As with everything this government touches it has become a total CF.

I think the problem for China is this came too early. They don't have any carriers yet. They have one old Russian one fitting out, and another being built from the keel up. Given a couple of years they would be able to send a CVBG over to explain things to the Libyans. But right now they just don't have the reach. And their amphibious capabilities are limited in range. Enough to cross the Taiwan straight with total air supremacy, but not a capability to land troops on the other side of the world. And unlike the US they don't have bases in Italy where they can launch fighters to cover their landings. They have no fleet bases in the Med, in fact they don't even do show the flag cruises there.

Of course that is only a further conviction against the Obama regime. Despite all of the limitations on China's ability to project power they have improvised a way to get their people out. The US with the entire power projection apparatus provided by USAFE, the U.S. 6th Fleet, and our European Allies, Obama has been unable to get our people out.
