Providence plans to pink slip all teachers

PROVIDENCE — The school district plans to send out dismissal notices to every one of its 1,926 teachers, an unprecedented move that has union leaders up in arms.

In a letter sent to all teachers Tuesday, Supt. Tom Brady wrote that the Providence School Board on Thursday will vote on a resolution to dismiss every teacher, effective the last day of school.

In an e-mail sent to all teachers and School Department staff, Brady said, “We are forced to take this precautionary action by the March 1 deadline given the dire budget outline for the 2011-2012 school year in which we are projecting a near $40 million deficit for the district,” Brady wrote. “Since the full extent of the potential cuts to the school budget have yet to be determined, issuing a dismissal letter to all teachers was necessary to give the mayor, the School Board and the district maximum flexibility to consider every cost savings option, including reductions in staff.” State law requires that teachers be notified about potential changes to their employment status by March 1.

“To be clear about what this means,” Brady wrote, “this action gives the School Board the right to dismiss teachers as necessary, but not all teachers will actually be dismissed at the end of the school year.”

“This is beyond insane,” Providence Teachers Union President Steve Smith said Tuesday night. “Let’s create the most chaos and the highest level of anxiety in a district where teachers are already under unbelievable stress. Now I know how the United States State Department felt on Dec. 7 , 1941.” That was the day the Japanese government bombed Pearl Harbor.

Looks like a consolidation move, no changes to coercive union rights.

Oh, pleeze.

Where’s my tiny little violin? I know it’s around here somewhere.

Public schools should be dumped altogether. Private and homeschooling should be the norm, along with doing away with any requirement that a child be educated.

That was John Belushi. Of course, it can be hard to tell the difference between a union teacher and a sloppy clown-like comedian.

I thought unions always preferred their people to lose their jobs over losing their bargaining rights or having even a minor reduction in benefits!

I say well done! Fire the lot of them.

Weren’t all the teachers in one school fired and then rehired.

This all show and no go is laughable.

Just like the fired teachers in D.C......the Court demanded they get all their back pay for the time they weren’t working.

Look for the union label on a Court near you.

After all, the union label is already on the medical centers as we saw in Madison.

Too clever by half trying to tie in the "government" angle.

Since it was under the direction of an Emperor, it would be the Japanese People", would it not?

_____

Sounds like an appropriate action given a $40 million budget deficit with 1,926 teachers.

In our school district we have 2,800 teachers and a budget deficit of $15 million.

It seems timely that Providence take action to get the finances in order.

Considering the number of towns named “Providence” in the US, it’s a good idea to have the state name among the keywords, if not in the title.

You mean Unions are disturbed when others create chaos that effects their members? Hmmm so odd....

I thought the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, right after they discovered San Diego. Named after “ sandiego” Which is a german term for “A whale’s vagina”.

I've seen this before in other towns.

Say teacher contracts have to be given out by the administration on March 1 and returned by the teachers by March 15.

If the school budget hasn't been voted on yet and there are questions if it will pass as such, the school district may give out pink slips instead of contracts, with the understanding that contracts will be provided when the budget situation becomes clearer.

This situation may not be that unusual.

EMPEROR Hirohito... Gum't by edict!

He said die, they flew into ships. They committed dastardly actions in his name. Similar in many ways to the current despot Mullahs.

t can be hard to tell the difference between a union teacher and a sloppy clown-like comedian.

You're assuming "the teacher" is a teacher and not a bussed in SEIU member.
