A pirate fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a U.S. Navy destroyer shadowing a hijacked yacht with four Americans aboard Tuesday. Then gunfire erupted, the military said. U.S. special forces rushed to the yacht only to find the four Americans fatally wounded.
The experienced yacht enthusiasts from California and Washington are the first Americans killed by Somali pirates since the start of attacks off East Africa several years ago. One of the American couples on board had been sailing around the world since 2004 handing out Bibles.
Their deaths appeared to underscore an increasingly brutal and aggressive shift by pirates in their treatment of hostages.
Killing hostages "has now become part of our rules," said a pirate who identified himself as Muse Abdi and referred to last week's sentencing of a pirate to 33 years in prison for the 2009 attack on the U.S. cargo vessel the Maersk Alabama.

But the BBC’s Will Ross in Nairobi says the pirates’ telling of the encounter differs from the US Navy’s. The pirates report the US warship attacked first, killing two pirates, and the hostages were killed in retaliation.
The incident will provoke further debate on whether the use of force is wise when dealing with Somali pirates who have already taken hostages, our correspondent says.

....interesting point....the British admiralty who had a lot of experiance in this sort of thing, used to bring pirates back to London....there they would be tried and hung by the harbor....and left hanging, so that others might learn from the example.
Maybe the Saltdogs can send some real genuine killers like the USAF, not bellbottom hand holders; we would give them a non-guided tour of the hell by way of the bottom of the sea faster than you can say “Bombs Away”.

Actually, all the Somalis brought back to the US have been convicted and sentenced to long prison terms - and they didn’t murder people in plain sight of a Navy ship.
Given the state and agenda of our media, we will never know.

I would hold a trial at sea. I would allow each prisoner to speak if he were able. You really don't need much more evidence than that they were part of a group that murdered others at sea to further their own financial gain.
After the evidence was presented, I would execute without hesitation those I believed guilty. I would do it myself unless someone under my command demanded the honor.

Why should I have to pay for their food, clothing and shelter (and lawyers and gymnasiums too)? Kill them and dump them at sea. It is permissible in the case of piracy under international law.
