CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand -- New Zealand's quake-ravaged Christchurch city was struck by a strong earthquake causing further damage after a strong quake hit the city last year, local media reported on Tuesday.
The quake was measured at magnitude 6.3 by local scientists with a focal depth of 5 kilometres, 10 kilometres southwest of the country's second biggest city.
Local media reported filing cabinets and computers being thrown from desks, damage to buildings, and a city bridge made impassable.
yeah, I was off reading tweets and looking at pictures. I came back to the thread and it was gone.....very odd and inconvenient to be sure.
I know someone and his wife from Brazil who are working within miles of that place.

Christchurch has been rocked by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, sending the region into pandemonium again, not six months after the September 4 quake.
The quake struck at 12.51pm and was at a depth of 5km, 10km southeast of Christchurch.
There have been reports of significant damage, most notably the Christchurch Cathedral.
2.46pm – As previously stated, the city has run out of ambulances and police cars are being used to ferry injured persons.
2.45pm – Multiple aftershocks are continuing to hit the city.

2.41pm – Civil Defence says the National Crisis Management Centre has been activated and urban search and rescue teams have been deployed. An Australian team has been put on call.
2.40pm – There are reports the city has run out ambulances; further reports of fatalities include witnesses seeing bodies pulled from rubble on Hereford St.

POPULAR FIGURE: A large crowd turned out at the Christchurch Town Hall last night to hear noted author, biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins...................However, it seemed shared by most of the capacity 2500 audience, who ensured Dawkins lived up to his billing as the "rock star of neo-atheism" as they cheered him on to the stage and gave him a standing ovation.

A large quake has struck Christchurch, with deaths confirmed and widespread destruction. Witnesses said there were buildings down all around Cathedral Square in the city, with the church destroyed. Police said two buses had been crushed by falling debris. The airport was closed after its tower had collapsed. Witnesses said there were reports of people being trapped in buildings across the city. Amber Armitage said people were wandering around central Christchurch trying to get out but all exits from the city were blocked. There was a strong smell of gas and clouds of dust.

Liquefaction is when the clay soil turns to a thick liquid solution, rather than a solid. That is what happened in the SF earthquake that caused so much damage. It’s like the ground just melts.
