Only in New York is $25,000-a- month rent considered a "deal."
Yet empty-nesters Mindy and Steve Klein think that's a good price for the 2,034-square-foot, three-bedroom apartment they rent at 55 Thompson St., a luxury 38-unit building.
For the past six months, the sky has been the limit, literally, from their pricey perch with a bird's-eye view of the Empire State building. Annual price for this vista: $300,000.
The Klein's apartment would sell for about $7 million to $10 million, developer Manhattan Skyline said. But the couple is in no rush to invest in a condo or a co-op after scouring the buyer-friendly market last year.

Second, I'll bet he and his wife do plenty of business-related entertaining at this apartment so that he can write off part of the rent as a business and entertainment expense on his taxes.
So, real life successful people (who may or may not be generous to the less successful) remind you of a video game?
I know these folks represent a totally different life style than we experience here in the midwest, but those prices astound me. Our medium priced home, here in my county is $67,000.00.
What makes the difference if has, or has not, donated to any damn thing? It’s his money; he can do with it as he pleases.
Why do people, even on FR, slam the wealthy? These folks are living their dream. I don’t know if they own the company ( or a portion of it), or if the company’s BofD sees him/them as a valued asset such that the salary and perks are appropriate to keep them around (and away from other companies).
Either way, IT SHOULD NOT MATTER to anyone who professes a free-market philosophy.
Granted, the playing field isn’t level in all instances, but it’s wrong-headed to blame the players when the fault lies with the league office...
I think you meant to post this on DU comrade.
“First of all, I would bet that Mr. Klein is not just president and CEO at his place of employment but an owner (such that his wealth is not just limited to his salary).
Second, I’ll bet he and his wife do plenty of business-related entertaining at this apartment so that he can write off part of the rent as a business and entertainment expense on his taxes. “
So what. Look at Trump. Trump is a scumbag that uses OPM to afford his comb over hair spray. These people are using the tax code properly. and seem to be able to live a good life. Bet he worked for it for having a good idea that people liked and purchased his stuff. You can do the same if you want. Do not covet. You have every right in this country to do the same thing. Come up with a good idea. Start a small business , grow it and enjoy the fruits of your hard labor.
p.s. I did, and am now relaxed in a nice home in my retirement. The company has done well. I am proud of my accomplishments. I will not cower from what I started.
I applaud these people who are able to afford this lifestyle.
Back in the days when this was a free country, folks were able to go as far as their talent and intelligence (with maybe a bit of luck thrown in) could take them.
There are Freepers here that sound like whiny left wingers.....
bump
I know I probably shouldn't say such things since I don't know these people but 95% odds are just too good to pass up.
I'm not making a value judgment re: Klein, but explaining how such an expensive apartment can makes sense from a practical point of view (either the rent is comparatively reasonable to him or he uses the apartment for entertaining).
BTW, I use to live in NYC and had an expensive apartment for the time (plus a large house in Connecticut). I didn't use my apartment for entertaining because I did all my entertaining at restaurants...but I certainly would have if the opportunity had arisen (and would have had no compunction in writing it off for tax purposes).
You might possibly be right—but then again, it’s supposed to be a free country and people get to vote for the candidates of their choice. A lot of people make what IMHO are stupid choices, but you can’t legislate away stupidity......
$25,000+ a month and you get to look at another building!
SUCKER!!!!!
No doubt they are free to vote anyway they choose. I was just making a comment/observation.
Yes—I know you were—I meant my remark to be a reminder to us all-—I watch those shows on HGTV and am amazed at what people will pay for an apartment in the “right” neighborhood in NYC —but it really isn’t any of my business, is it—LOL!
