Love Yukon Gold
Have you dried tomatoes? I’d like to find better tips on that.
Yeah...I usually dry the last tomatoes I pick before the first frost. I slice them in half and put them on a french bread loaf pan (it’s perforated) and set that on top of the heater (oil electric) that I use in my sunroom. I suppose I could use the oven to dry bigger batches but I have this thing about running unvented gas appliances overnight. :)
My usual method of tomato preservation is canning.
...Have you tried dried tomatoes?
Easy to make
All you need is a good crop of ‘maters
A pickup truck, and a hot day
This may or may not be helpful for somethings you may try:

As to the cause of the potatoes going bad, I’m at a loss...
“I just love fresh green beans, ham and potatoes!”
I’m so envious right now. Here in Northern Utah we still have several inches of snow on the ground and I’ll not be able to plant for at least 10 weeks :( I’m thinking of putting some pots in my southern window’s. I have some bamboo and a big rosemary plant inside right now, but I’m getting itchy for my garden!
Where can we get Jerusalem Artichokes. I’ve heard of these as an alternative for diabetics. I’m not diabetic, but my father is and I’ve been wanting to hear more about them. Thanks in advance, if you have the time.
I’m in Ohio. Last frost date May 15.
So the plan is to finally put up the greenhouse (16X12) I’ve had in the barn for the past 5 years.
Eating canned vegetables is about as satisfying as making love to a blow-up doll. (OK, I’ve never done it with a blow-up doll, but I grew up on canned vegetables. Yuck.)
It’s an ethical issue. Sometime we have to make a hard choices between Poisson pill and double digit yield.
Cheers!
They say “Save the Earth”
but the Earth will do just fine, regardless
What they mean is to clear the Earth of parasitic people
So only those “enlightened” live on
Last year I took ten weeks of cabinetry and woodworking classes with my best friend, and we took a welding class starting a few weeks ago. We wanted to take blacksmithing, but it was cancelled as there weren’t enough enrolled.
I think there is definitely some divine inspiration, herd mentality, call it what you will going on. I’m going to try making soap this year. I have been interested in doing things hands on for a long time. I thought about buying a laundry drying rack this year, but decided that for the same cost I could build one myself, to my specific needs. It’s great to be able to do things on your own. I often envy the knowledge (not necessarily lifestyle) of our forefathers in maintaining what they had. While I’m no eco-greeny, I do agree that our society has decayed a bit into a consumer fanatical mess. I like good quality items, and I like to do things myself. I’ve never had, not will own an ipad gizmo do-hicky that I’d have to replace each time a new one comes out. To each his own. Unfortunatly though, when everyone else wants low quality, easily replacable and cheap, you have to really look hard or really fork out to get the quality tools etc. that you need/want. And, for me, hopefully not from China (I’m working on this).
Well said! They are continuing to make plans on Global warming and high speed rail.
I think it’s Soylent Green, but I can’t read the nutrition label.
I got mine from Jung: http://www.jungseed.com/dp.asp?pID=04524
The first year, the rabbits nipped the tops off as they came up so they didn’t produce well that year.
I got maybe four or five pounds from the one-pound order that I planted last year but I’ve got part shade and clay soil that I tried to amend. They probably would have done better if I had watered and fertilized properly. I fenced out the rabbits last year with a 2’ tall ring of chicken wire.
I’d like to make a greenhouse, or buy one if the price is right. Do you have any recommendations for either, by any chance?
Thanks so much for the info and the link. Vermin are such a pain. We have had a rampant problem with voles because it didn’t get cold enough last year to thin them out. Thankfully there are snakes on the property that hopefully will help with that. There are some cat about the property as of this winter, that I’m hoping will help end that problem too.
You got that right.
Mmmmm...
Hossenfeffer...
Good luck with it!
I said “part shade” but I guess “part sun” would be more accurate. I always get hung up on that whole “part” thing. They had enough sun to flower. I had some trees trimmed and removed last fall so they’ll get more sun this year.
