They are Christians:

Omar Jamal, first secretary at the Somali mission, identified the yacht as the S/V Quest.

Jamal said the hijacking raises “serious concern” as it follows the sentencing in New York on Thursday of a Somali pirate who kidnapped and brutalized the captain of a U.S.-flagged merchant ship off the coast of Africa in 2009. Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse was sentenced to 33 years in prison.

A website chronicling the voyage of a yacht named S/V Quest describes it as being the home of Jean and Scott Adam. The couple has been sailing around the world since December 2004, according to the website. “This is planned to be an eight or ten year voyage,” it states.

The Adams run a Bible ministry, according to their website, and have been distributing Bibles to schools and churches in remote villages in areas including the Fiji Islands, Alaska, New Zealand, Central America and French Polynesia.

The couple are members of the Marina del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, California, according to the website. A woman who answered the phone there Friday night would not confirm that the couple are members and said the club could not release any information.

Are you suggesting that bombarding the pirates with spaghetti COBOL code might be a way to defeat them? An interesting ideer! (I’ve seen it defeating many a man.)

Are these the same 4 just released by North Korea recently after 4 years in prison for sailing near their coast?

Bummer (just barely) had pirates gunned down in early 2009.

You sound like you might be interested...great book: "Neptune's Inferno" about the naval battles around Guadalcanal in 1942-43.

It was a fascinating, graphic look at those battles so many people know so little about.

I cannot believe these people would be so clueless as to go sailing through those waters not knowing the risk.

People seem to be implying they have a history of getting boarded.

Sounds like a bully magnet with canvas sails...

I've had the New Jersey firing their 16's over my head... and like I just told somebody in a PM... it was majestic.

Then on the off-days in the exercise my (comparatively) little CG cutter tied up in Long Beach right in front of NJBB, with our fantail right under that magnificent bow. What a view. :-)

Wow. That must have been an experience. I was able to go on the New Jersey several times when I lived in the Philippines as a dependent...

” Hey look, I’m no fan of the guy, but I was a fan out the last outcome.”

Presumably, you’re referring to the sniper killing of the three perps, right? That was purportedly done without the express approval of the Messiah and he was purportedly very upset. Seems the ship’s Captain had been given discretion to handle the situation as he felt proper.

Purportedly Barack Obama had given his approval for the Navy to use lethal force to free captain Richard Phillips, who had spent five days as the prisoner of the heavily armed mercenaries.

'Flawless': U.S. Navy snipers killed three Somali pirates with just three shots... in the dark, from the deck of a rolling ship

I don’t think it’s a nanny-state deal at all. What ever happened to expecting something for being a citizen and paying taxes?

The whole reason behind the creation of a navy in the first place was to protect the interests of U.S. flagged vessels on the high seas. Protection against pirates... especially... :-)

According to what I heard, the SOPA (senior officer present afloat) give the order. Obozo could not make a decision.

Captain Phillips made his second escape attempt and that precipitated the final (and fatal for the pirate's) solution to the hostage crisis.

Obozo isn't going to do jack. Let's hope the SEALs get on-scene quickly and they take out these scumbags quickly.

I am totally done with rich “adventurers” who put themselves and the rescue forces of countries all around the world at risk for a “life experience.” I would let them sort it out with the pirates and hire some Blackwater types to deliver the money and hope they get released.
