TONY Abbott's official frontbench understudy has reignited immigration tensions by denouncing Islam as a "totalitarian, political and religious ideology".
Liberal parliamentary secretary Cory Bernardi revealed last night he had received death threats after making the comments.
While the immigration debate usually differentiates between the religion of Islam and extreme fundamentalist interpretations, Senator Bernardi confronted the issue head-on yesterday.
"Islam itself is the problem - it's not Muslims," he told radio station MTR.
"Muslims are individuals that practise their faith in their own way, but Islam is a totalitarian, political and religious ideology.
"It tells people everything about how they need to conduct themselves, who they're allowed to marry and how they're allowed to treat other people."
Senator Bernardi said Islam had "not moved on" since it was founded and that extremists wanted fundamentalist Islamic rule implemented in Australia.
.....
The remarks provoked a strong reaction from Ikebal Patel, president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, who said Senator Bernardi had "crossed the line" with his attack on Islam.
"These comments are more than offensive; they are bigoted," Mr Patel said.
"Cory Bernardi needs to have a good read of the Bible if he is a practising Christian.
"This is hardly the language of a religious person."

Whoa... Some politician actually gets it.
Proving his assertions are 100% dead on the money.
Islam is the religion, Muslims are called Muslims because they practice Islam. What am I missing?
I think his point is that individual Muslims may be decent people simply trying to live a decent life - but the core beliefs and practices of their unreformed faith can’t be ignored just because of that.
It is about demonic worship, similar to what you would find in a satanic cult.
Muslims are the ones who are carrying out Islam.
They are definitely part of the problem.
Someone who gets it. I hope this doesn’t damage his political career.
Geert Wilders has been accused of hate speech. All he did was quote what Muslims actually say about their own religion. And what the Koran says about itself.
Some Muslims do, indeed, seem to be decent people. But the religion is poison.
I’ve known a few people who have escaped from Muslim run countries. They’ve either been arsholes or tragically sad cases.
A liberal also.
To me Muslims and Islam is the same thing. Muslims practice Islam.
Then we have liberals here that think if we submit to these folks they'll escape having their heads lopped off. I cannot conceive the liberal mind; don't care to anyway.
Missed your post when I made mine. You are not missing a thing.
Sometime what we say and what we mean are two different things...
maybe he equated muslims to people?....../s
Sure. But the fundamental problem is not that Muslims are sinners - we are all sinners. The problem is the koran. It is a book inspired by Satan - and the people that pledged allegiance to this book are reeking havoc (i.e., doing the work of the hater of mankind - Satan).
So yes, Muslims are the ones following the koran - but I think the spotlight should be put on the book and what it says. This point is ignored in public. The koran instructs its adherents to provide the non-believers with 3 options: convert, be enslaved, or be killed. The point to be made to the muslim trapped in this cult is to ask him if he truly believes this book was inspired by the Creator God (who is Holy and Good) - or the Deceiver who seeks to promote misery and death amongst mankind.
The koran - and the history of its 'prophet' - answers the question.
It seems he made two mistakes in his comment.
Islam’s the problems, not Muslims, says Senator Cory Bernardi
Does this paper have an EDITOR or someone who knows English?
Everybody should revisit the Koran from time to time.
The point to be made to the muslim trapped in this cult is to ask him if he truly believes this book was inspired by the Creator God (who is Holy and Good) - or the Deceiver who seeks to promote misery and death amongst mankind.
An inescapable conclusion is the answer to your questions.
Regards.
In Australia, the Liberal Party is the main conservative party - the party was named for an older ideal of liberalism.
And Senator Bernardi is, further, from the conservative wing of the party.
Thanks for the explanation. Always learn something here. Regards.
I’ll try and put this into context.
What Senator Bernardi is responding to is an idea presented in the Australian press that ‘Muslim extremists’ are the source of the threat against us, which implies that the problem is those Muslims who follow an extreme or unusual form of Islam.
He is pointing out that this is not the case. Muslim terrorists are not following an extreme or unusual form of Islam. They are following a form of Islam that is exactly based on what the Koran says. They are doing exactly what their holy book tells them to do. This isn’t an extreme or unusual interpretation - it’s a mainstream interpretation of the Islamic faith.
Not all professed Muslims follow it - but those who don’t are actually the ones who have moved away from the core of their faith. They are the ones who are interpreting the Koran differently from what is literally written. They have accepted there are elements of a book written over 1000 years ago that are not compatible with the modern world and so they have modified their practices.
The fundamental problem is the tenets of the faith itself. For Muslims to live in a modern world, in a civilised culture, they have to reject at least some elements of the Koran.
People need to stop pretending that the ‘extremists’ are in some way an aberration of Islam. They are not - they are simply doing what they believe their faith requires.
That is Bernardi’s point, in my view. Islam, as laid down in the Koran, is the biggest problem that need to be addressed.
Islam have never had a reformation. It’s never had a renaissance.
The Christian world wrestles constantly with the idea of how to live a Christian life in a changing world. Large sections of the Islamic world simply doesn’t want to change.
Some parts of it do better than others - Indonesia, the most populous Islamic nation is actually trying to be a secular democracy and for the most part succeeding. But to do this, it is explicitly having to embrace ideas that are opposed to the Koran - such as including in its constitution, a concept of freedom of religion - a concept that does not exist in the Koran. And even there, they are wrestling with some areas, and some groups, who do not want to change.
For further context, Barry Goldwater -- the patron saint of the conservative movement in the USA -- always referred to himself as "an 18th century liberal".
The Founding Fathers epitomized the liberealism of their day.
