Adventurers try to trek across Australia all the time – but few attempt the journey in a wind-powered electric car. Two Germans, Dirk Gion and Stefan Simmerer, recently wrapped up an 18-day drive that took them 3,000 miles along the southern Australian coast in a vehicle that used the breeze to juice up its battery. The total electricity cost for the Wind Explorer vehicle came out to less than $15. In addition to an 8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, the car is equipped with a kite system and a portable wind turbine with a 20-foot bamboo mast.

It looks like a pedal car with a mast.

18 days to go 3000 miles?
What is that, 160 miles per day?
The article does not mention what incredible speeds they may have reached...

The article says it can go up to 50 mph. Yeah! In a hurricane! Or 50 mph for 5 minutes. Then the batteries are dead. But,,,, I’ll bet they had a good time doin’ it. So,,,,, kudos!

Let’s see ‘em two blocks in daylight in Detroit. LOL They’ll need a platoon of Marines to survive.

Might be tricky getting a 20’ mast under a freeway overpass. Wind powered cars could work on the Great Plains.

Another downside is cost. Batteries cost roughly $1,000 per kWh. That puts the battery pack in the Volt at an estimated price of $16,000. It only needs a battery pack priced at $8,000 outputting 8 kWh. The additional $8,000 is money spent for energy not needed and weight not desired.

“18-day drive that took them 3,000”

This iron man feat took them less than 200 miles a day?...in a 450 lb ‘car’...really, that’s a ‘car’?

It would be about $5,000 for a battery like that.

Thnx.

Maybe Lead Acid batteries are still the best way to go. The 1900's Detroit Electric car used Lead Acid batts and had a range of ~ 50 mi.

My, how technology has improved over the last 100 years.
