Edit 2.17.11 1:18pm EST: This article was updated to include Bieber’s quotation as corrected by Rolling Stone. The magazine says it was due to an “editing error” that the statement, “I don’t know how that would be a reason,” was left out of the star’s quoted answer on abortion after rape.
February 16, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a soon-to-be-published interview with Rolling Stone, teen idol Justin Bieber revealed that he shares something in common with a growing number of young people in the United States - he is pro-life.
“I really don’t believe in abortion,” Bieber told contributing editor Vanessa Grigoriadis. “It’s like killing a baby?”
When pressed as to whether he opposes abortion in the case of rape, the young singer replied, “Um. Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I don’t know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.”
Canadian-born Bieber’s conviction evidently has nothing to do with party politics, as he revealed when asked who he would support when he’s old enough to vote. “I’m not sure about the parties. But whatever they have in Korea, that’s bad,” he said.
Erik Whittington of the pro-life organization Rock for Life said Bieber’s remarks are “Great news” since he “has huge influence on young people.”
At the same time he questioned Bieber’s hedging on the question of rape. “Justin, I thought you said, ‘Its like killing a baby?’ If it is, which it is that what is the problem? Why the hesitation? How come its OK to judge other situations but not this one?”
Bieber also suggested that his young fans should wait to have sex. I dont think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them. I think you should just wait for the person youre in love with, he said.
In a recent interview with Catholic Online, Justin Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, said that she “brought Justin up in the faith” and that her son attended a Catholic school. Mallette, a former Catholic, identifies as a non-denominational Christian.
Mallette asked her son’s Christian fans to pray for the young singer, who shot to stardom at the ripe age of 15 after his single “One Time” reached number 12 on the Canadian Hot 100, and called the entertainment industry a “dark” business. “My prayer is for Justin to be protected against the temptations of the industry,” she said.
The youthfulness of the American pro-life movement - the March for Life in Washington this year, as usual, owed much of its size to an army of young people - has been noticed even by leaders of the abortion lobby. “I just thought, my gosh, they are so young. There are so many of them, and they are so young,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America president Nancy Keenan last year, after observing the March.
You are exactly right, but given the way kids use the word "like," I have no doubt he meant exactly what you said. But the punctuation would be: "Abortion is, like, killing a baby."
All youth get it. Discribe abortion to any 5 year old and they would tell you it is killing a baby - murder. It takes a mature adult able to pretend that killing an unborn child is no more kiling than vacumming the cellulite from Oprah’s ass - just a few dead cells & tissue, nothing more.
Bieber is confused... Abortion isn’t “just like killing a baby?” it is murdering a Baby. (No ?s about it.)
“Pattie Mallette, said that she brought Justin up in the faith and that her son attended a Catholic school. Mallette, a former Catholic, identifies as a non-denominational Christian.”
This is what I am - a protestant that used to be Catholic, and became nondenominational.
I am not slamming Catholics to say this, but these are usually people of strong faith- simply because if you go through the effort of changing, you feel more strongly about it such things. People who have casual faith don’t care enough to change.
My guess is his mom is a strong Christian. This young man, if he continues on this path, may be a very strong force for life and Christianity. He certainly has a lot of influence on young folk. It’s refreshing.
I never understood what George Michael meant when he wore his choose life shirt. Was is a pro life message? I never paid enough attention to him to know his reasoning.
In January during the feast of the holy innocents, my three year old was discussing king herod’s slaughter of baby boys (It was in one of her baby bibles). Anyway, she said “we should never kill babies. They’re cute. Why would anybody kill a baby”. Three years old, yet smarter than half the US population.
He’s young. Not all of us are fully formed at 16.
He's just a kid, and a fairly nice one, although his music is less than wonderful.
Sad that one day she will get an answer to her question ... and know that some evil freaks do kill babies. I envy her innocence ... What has been seen cannot be unseen, what has been heard cannot be unheard, what has been learned cannot be unlearned.
IIRC, the slogan was actually part of an anti-drug campaign in the UK at the time Wham! wore them, but the slogan caught on immediately with the Pro-Life movement in the US.
As we all know, when Beiber talks...
people fart.
Teach your kids this answer to the “what about rape” question:
If one person does something bad to another person, should a third person be killed for it?
Well, it IS killing a baby.
But this is a good start. He’s thinking it through at least.
My daughter has a number of public school friends who, while liberal, tend to be surprisingly pro-life.
On the subject of rape he said something like ‘I don't see why that is a reason’ (to kill a baby).
They edited that part of his response out, leaving it somewhat ambiguous as to how he felt about abortion because they left in his post-modernistic ‘haven't been there’ hedge.
Not that I give a DAMN about this guy, but he should be quoted accurately, and before anyone gets too up in arms about what he said - THEY SHOULD KNOW WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID.
Okay, was that “Abortion is, like, killing a baby” or “Abortion is like killing a baby”? Because the first way just sounds stupid. The second one actually is.
Obviously George didn't take his own advice.
Hence my admonition in #20, to not pin all our hopes on the messenger.
Good for him. I just decided my girls can listen to his music and we will buy some of his CDs.
Good for Justin I thought he was just airhead pop star
Actually I think he has career in tv he is on CSI Tonight
