Gov. Rick Scott to African-American legislators: “You guys”

Florida governor Rick Scott spent Monday at a luncheon with African-American lawmakers, speaking to the group about the upcoming legislative session.

In doing so, Mr. Scott seems have set off a debate over race and politics.

“I grew up probably in the same situation as you guys,” Mr. Scott said to the group of 20 Democrats. “I started school in public housing. My dad had a sixth-grade education.”

A number of state Democrats objected to the assumption. State Rep. Betty Reed said she was offended by the remark, adding “He assumed that everyone [[n the room] was poor and that can only be because you’re black.”

The governor’s comment is the latest incident to hit a state governor. Both Ohio governor John Kasich and Mississippi governor Haley Barbour are dealing with debates centered on race and politics.

Mr. Scott attended the event as part of an effort to discuss possible cuts aimed at African-American communities. The Florida Republican presented his budget last week, proposing steep cuts in social programs and education.

And if he’d said he’d gone to a private school and his dad had a Ph.D they’d accuse him of racism for not understanding the plight of their community.

I know Betty Reed and her comment doesn’t surprise me. She’s in way over her head. Time to take all ‘you guys’ on Scott. I didn’t look at your remark as racist and Florida has a whole lot of ‘you guys’ who need addressing.

Interesting. Liberals assume that any cuts to welfare is racist, since they assume most of the people on it are minorities. A Republican assumes the same thing (minorities are poor and downtrodden) and he offends them.

Gov. Scott should apologize. And in the apology, point out that his error was based on apparently inaccurate Liberal stertoptying of minorities as poor and oppressed. He mistakenly assumed that in a nation characterized as racist as the USA is, that one should assume they were downtrodden.

Obama is bankrupting America but Rick Scott makes an innocent comment and they make a huge issue out of it.

Next time he addresses a black audience like that, bring a gullah or ebonics translater. Sorry, but Barbara Billingsly has recently died.

"Sorry, but Barbara Billingsly has recently died"

That qualifies her to vote Democrat.
