Gen Petraeus probably believes that US public support for this 10 year war in a country run by a corrupt regime is inevitably going to wane, the longer it lasts. I think it is happening quickly. His ability to either win it or bring it to a satisfactory conclusion as perceived by US public opinion he probably now sees as an impossible situation.

Maybe he’d just like to spend some time with his wife and family for once. I mean, how long has he been either in Afghanistan or Iraq? Years. I know he gets to travel back and forth, but it’s just not the same.

25,000 American POWs had been liberated from POW camps by the Soviets, but never returned to the US.

Were they in the end ?

I know some Soviet POWs begged not to return as thety knew they faced camps, trials etc but the Allies sent them back to Stalin anyway.

There seems to be no records of his reinstatement to American citizenship after he left Indonesia as a "Sottoro".. or his mother.. What is he, Indonesian or American, he cannot be both.. can you be born an American and then give up your citizenship to another nation.. AND not only that be "reinstated"?..

Yes, as a minor, you could hold dual citizenship at that time.

the correct version is this:

Those soviet troops who were in British zones in Germany were sent back, whether they wanted to go or not.

those Soviet troops who were in the American zone were NOT sent back and stayed in GErmany, then emigrated to the States, Canada.

those that went back to Stalin were killed or sent to Siberia.

As I recollect (from International Law class in 1961 one had to report to a federal official (of some sort, it might have been a Post Office...or it might have been Immigration & Naturalization) and, I would assume, present documents proving you were eligible for American citizenship.

And, I would imagine, present any passport or visa issued by the other country. Whereupon, I would again assume that you would be issued some kind of document (likely from Washington or some regional office).

Sorry for the vagueness...but it's been fifty years...
