Whoopi Goldberg bitterly criticized The New York Times on Monday mornings The View for not mentioning that she had won an Oscar in a Sunday piece about the paucity of black actors who have won Academy Awards.
Goldberg, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the 1990 film Ghost, said, I am embarrassed to tell you it hurt me terribly. She was referring to a piece titled Hollywoods Whiteout, written by film critics Manohla Dargis and A.O. Scott.
The piece lamented the lack of Oscar nominations and wins for black actors, noting that Denzel Washington and Halle Berry had won Oscars nine years ago.
Real change seemed to have come to movies or at least the Academy, which had given statuettes to a total of seven black actors in the previous 73 years, the authors wrote.
After Mr. Washington and Ms. Berry, there would be Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker (both Best Actors), Morgan Freeman (Best Supporting Actor), Jennifer Hudson, and MoNique (Best Supporting Actresses).

UPDATE: THE NEW YORK TIMES RESPONDS
A spokesperson for The New York Times responded to EW:
The error lies with those who are reading the story incorrectly. The point of the piece was not to name every black actor or actress who has been awarded an Oscar, it was to draw a comparison between the number who won prior to 2002 (the year Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won) and those who have won since.
And the story states very clearly that in 73 years, prior to 2002, only seven black actors/actresses won Oscars.

But that wouldn't exactly be NEWS, would it?
Get that chip fixed, Whoopi.
I never understood why the gave her an Oscar anyway.
On her best day she could not lick Hattie McDaniel’s shoes clean, Hattie won an Oscar for “Gone With The Wind” by the way and had absolutely no use for the NAACP.
Did they mention that the source of her name is her constant flatulance?
I’d say it’s a wash.
Boo fricking hoo! Got her feelers hurt. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the feel-good liberal left in all its glory.
What am I missing? Whoopi won in 1990. The NYT listed the black actors who won prior to 2002. They did not mention her. The NYT seems to feel that the report was accurate. I don’t see how it could be.
Whoopie was cheated out of an Oscar for her work in The Color Purple and has never been happy with the Academy. Remember the big winner that go around? Stupid movie about how romantic it is to be a white woman running a plantation into the ground.
Whoopie has a dick? I knew it. I KNEW it.
You’d think at some point she’d get tired of whinning so much!!!
Whoopie is a gaping rectum.
Hotdog, meet hallway.
I agree with you. NYT should have mentioned her.
"...and just to prove that the Oscars really are meaningless, let it be known that even Whoopi Goldberg received one. These are just like the Nobel Peace Prize. ..."
What are they whining about? Since 2002 there have been 8 Oscars, with a total of 32 nominations for actors and actresses.
Blacks have won 5 of the 32, or 16%. That's about 50% more than their percentage of the population.
They did not “list” those prior to 2002, they mentioned a couple and then listed those who won after 2002 and said a total of seven had one prior to 2002 without listing them.
At least according to the article. I didn’t go to the Times itself.
From the comments:
“Wow, Im surprised by how many of you missed the point of this article, do Americans read anymore?
The article was talking about how things seemed to be progressing and then you reach this year where the Oscars are whiter than they have been in years, and the year itself in movies is whiter than its been in years.
The article is questioning whether things are in a backwards momentum or if this year theres just an Academy. My biggest problem with Whoopis outrage, and the thing that she should feel most foolish about, is the fact that the article only mentioned 2 of the pre-2002 7 black Oscar winners.
Shes so self aggrandizing that she couldnt recognize that she wasnt the only black Oscar winner not mentioned.
And jmcg: to list all of the winners wouldnt have served the purpose of the article. Theres no reason why people cant do the research on their own rather than having all the facts handed to them on a silver platter.”
The non-mention has more to do with the minor category of her award than with her pigmentation.
You left off “stupidity.”
Actually, that’s why she took the name “Whoopi”. Her mother convinced her to use Goldberg instead of Cushion.
