The Pennsylvania Maple Festival - Meyresdale PA
I'd like to make amends for a post I made earlier. I shot from the hip and missed, so I'm falling back on something fun, interesting - I hope - and of which I am familiar.
This is near and dear to my heart although I haven't been able to attend for a while. I first attended in the late 1950's and documented it on a GE reel to reel tape recorder that was pretty hi-tech for the time.
Pinging Bill Murray...Groundhog Day PALES in comparison to this!
My family used to take a train from Pittsburgh to Meyersdale every Spring for this Milestone of the Year. We often were on flatcars with nothing but ropes to hold us in.
Times have changed, but the festival remains fairly hometown, perhaps by choice, as MSM and national attention may corrupt.
My family is looking to go this year...Mrs p6, myself, kids and grandkids. We want to pass it on and that is my reason for posting tonight.
I suspect there are quite a few FReepers in Western Pennsylvania who would enjoy this.
Linky to maple syrup goodness HERE!

It's a piece of America that may well soon be lost.

Beaver County also has a maple festival. I'm spoiled. Maple syrup is all I will use. It's pricey, but worth it.

Of course my dyslexia helped me screw up the name of the town...sigh.
I have to triple check everything I type and even then I miss most of the time.
Maybe there's a FED program for folks like me...sigh.

A few years back, a friend brought me some maple candy she purchased from a maple festival. It was DELICIOUS! They used a mold in the shape of a maple leaf. If you ever see some, try a piece. You won’t be disappointed.

Mrs p6 gave me some “real” maple syrup for Christmas. From NE. It’s good but dark Karo as far as I’m concerned! WPA, WVA is where you get the best!

been there to celebrate. Ironically, we had breakfast in town at a restaurant during the Maple Syrup festival and they served FAKE maple syrup.
best thing we did was to tour several locations that harvest syrup.

Here's a link to a producer I found at th PA Farm show.

They ship and I have bought from them but there are LOTS of others as well!
This year at the farm show they had a televised demonstration of making the maple leaf candy. Not exactly edge of the chair thing, but it tastes GREAT LOL!

BLIS Maple Syrup, so good chefs fight over it. At least that's what they said on the Food Channel a few years ago when I first learned about it. I prefer the vanilla infused syrup. A little pricey, true, but not that expensive, as gourmet items go and, besides, you only live once! Disclaimer: I have no business relationship with BLIS whatsoever. I'm just a consumer who likes their maple syrup.

YUPPERS to that! It used to be you'd go to a "family style" seating place at a building in the center of town. They now say it's at the Lions and it may well be, but it used to be that you could get the syrup as it finished and cooled.
I have never tasted anything like that!

Thank you! I don’t know if you ever tried them but they really are good. They are the type of candy you are satisfied with one (unlike M&M’s where you go handful after handful). The products sound good as well (compared to where I purchase maple syrup and the price, it is a bargain). Mom

Mrs p6 and I love BLIS! A bit different from the "pure" stuff but great nonetheless!
Yeah...does cost a bunch but so does pure maple syrup.
There is a lot of great tasting syrup from Canada as well, but I'm getting prejudiced to the PA stuff.

In that pic everyone must be at the annual pancake/sausage/maple syrup dining hall, LOL!
Don't go if you need to lose weight!

I used to do a fair amount of traveling overseas on business. I always took along a few small bottles of Ohio maple syrup as gifts for my hosts. It was always appreciated. Now that it comes in plastic bottles, it's easy to pack in my checked luggage.

Badjoe was born and raised in Meyersdale and was at the first Maple Festival in 1947. He personally knew the first Maple Queen, Agnes Hornbrook.

Nice link. Definitely going to order from them; they have several products I've never tried and but always wanted to.
Ahhh, I LOVE maple syrup! It's got to be one of my most favorite things in the whole world. Just a look at a bottle of it can make your mouth water.
Incidentally, next time you make your favorite pancake recipe, add two or three tablespoons of good maple syrup to your batter. This will impart an additional layer of mapley goodness to your pancakes that slathering on the maple syrup alone just can't achieve.
