David Keene, the longtime chairman of the American Conservative Union, stepped down on Wednesday as the leader of the organization, one day ahead of the first of its annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
Keene had chaired the organization since 1984 and will still preside over the annual conservative gathering. His impending exit had been anticipated, but not the timing.
Al Cardenas was selected to succeed Keene. Cardenas was born in Cuba in 1948, and has been a player in conservative politics since the Reagan presidency.
I look forward to taking advantage of the new energies we see today in the conservative movement to make this storied organization even more influential in the future said Cardenas in a press release.
Excerpt:
Deepening a rift ahead of the largest annual gathering of conservative activists in Washington this week, some of the movements top leaders have circulated a private memo urging that conservatisms founding principles be recast to exclude gay rights groups from the Reagan coalition of economic, defense and social conservatives.
The memo, obtained by The Washington Times, was signed by about two dozen leaders, and was released just as the Conservative Political Action Conference is set to begin its most contentious session in years, riven with divisions over a gay rights Republican group that is helping sponsor the conference and the social conservatives who are trying to keep it out
“Gays” are trivial next to the foothold the Muslim Brotherhood (via Suhail Khan) has attained in this ostensibly “conservative” group. Keene is a national disgrace.
hi, STARWISE, how are you? You must be (or I must be) psychadelic. Just posted to onyx to see how you are.
ANYWAY, on top of the GOPride problem, Keene’s former wife who’d been bookkeeper for the organization has been accused of embezzling a couple hundred thousand dollars (IIRC $400K) over a period of years.

Excerpt:
Veteran conservative movement activist Al Cardenas has been unanimously elected to succeed David Keene as chairman of the American Conservative Union (ACU) on the eve of the organization's biggest event, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
Cardenas, a business executive and attorney who came with his family to America from Cuba in 1960, was an early supporter in Florida of Ronald Reagan's presidential aspirations, serving as co-chairman of Reagan's campaign in that state in 1976 and 1980, then performing a number of services for the chief executive after the 1980 election victory.
Thanks, Ed .. trying to hang in.
And thanks so much for thinking of me.

Jeeze .. that, I didn’t know. I know how low he sunk
commercializing the organizations, but not that.

SUCH NEWS!
I just replied to you!
...some of the movement's top leaders have circulated a private memo urging that conservatism's founding principles be recast to exclude gay rights groups from the Reagan coalition of economic, defense and social conservatives. Thanks STARWISE.
My personal opinion is that if you are for limited government, you are for a government that doesn’t get ask what is going on in your bedroom, doesn’t rummage through (or insist that you organize and submit) your banking papers, or in any way influences what occurs in your house of worship, among other limitations.
see Tainan’s post #7 for link to story about the alleged embezzlement.
“My personal opinion is...”
Sure fair enough but what I disagree with is a particular homosexual faction. There should not be this distinction. There should be only one identifier- Conservative. Not black conservative, white conservative, lesbian conservative blah blah blah. Just conservative. End of story.
These groups need to stop using the C word.
It SURE IS!!!
Wow .. thank you, tainan.
Crooks is crooks.
Gays might be trivial but the gay agenda involves shoving their deviancy down the throats of schoolkids.
Cardenas is a lobbyist, lawyer and a former head of the Florida GOP -- and his support of Charlie Crist over Marco Rubio in the 2010 Senate race is a sore point with some conservatives.
Crist?! I guess they can now take the name Conservative out of the ACU.
bedroom? If it was their bedroom it wouldn't be a problem. Its schools, its the streets (do you want a link to that ZombieTimes picture post?) its the demand that GOVERNMENT accept and approve of their "lifestyle".
Thats not their "private life".
Hey Starwise. I spent some time praying for you this evening. Hope you are doing okay.
