Social Scientist Sees Bias Within
NY Times ^ | 2/7/11 | JOHN TIERNEY

Some of the world’s pre-eminent experts on bias discovered an unexpected form of it at their annual meeting.

Discrimination is always high on the agenda at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology’s conference, where psychologists discuss their research on racial prejudice, homophobia, sexism, stereotype threat and unconscious bias against minorities. But the most talked-about speech at this year’s meeting, which ended Jan. 30, involved a new “outgroup.”

It was identified by Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist at the University of Virginia who studies the intuitive foundations of morality and ideology. He polled his audience at the San Antonio Convention Center, starting by asking how many considered themselves politically liberal. A sea of hands appeared, and Dr. Haidt estimated that liberals made up 80 percent of the 1,000 psychologists in the ballroom. When he asked for centrists and libertarians, he spotted fewer than three dozen hands. And then, when he asked for conservatives, he counted a grand total of three.

“This is a statistically impossible lack of diversity,” Dr. Haidt concluded, noting polls showing that 40 percent of Americans are conservative and 20 percent are liberal. In his speech and in an interview, Dr. Haidt argued that social psychologists are a “tribal-moral community” united by “sacred values” that hinder research and damage their credibility — and blind them to the hostile climate they’ve created for non-liberals.

This isn’t surprising.

It is testimony to the fact that all Psychologists are crazy as toilet rats.

Their “Guidance” has gotten us where we are today, Over run with diversity, Homosexuals, and incompetents in Affirmative action jobs.

My favorite line: “Anywhere in the world that social psychologists see women or minorities underrepresented by a factor of two or three, our minds jump to discrimination as the explanation,” said Dr. Haidt, who called himself a longtime liberal turned centrist. “But when we find out that conservatives are underrepresented among us by a factor of more than 100, suddenly everyone finds it quite easy to generate alternate explanations.”

I just don't want to live with homos, druggies, whores, free loaders...all predators. It's common sense...not prejudice.

So, I studied hard, got good grades, graduated, got a job, married, raised a family and am now retired.

So what really separates us?? Bottom line....morality.

The current leftwing definition of "minority" is "people who are, or have been oppressed".

The numbers do not matter. Blacks are minorities. Women are minorities. Hispanics are minorities. Liberal psychologists are minorities.

The three conservative psychologists at that meeting? Those oppressors shall be crushed!!

Psychology, a fake profession, with no scientific basis for existence, should be relegated to the same area of circus side shows and palm reading and astrology.

If anything shows just how clueless these people are it’s the fact that they don’t already know this. Their radical left-wing bias of is readily apparent to anyone with even rudimentary logic skills. Unfortunately “rudimentary logic skills” leaves out members of what is laughingly called the “soft sciences”. Referring to these frauds are “scientists” is an insult to real scientists everywhere.

This man will soon be culled from the herd.

Any time that you create a profession that only has itself as a customer, capable of defining its own success, and paid by a third party without input, you will find it to be dominated by liberals. They are like kudzu in such fields, pushing out all others.

I totally agree.

I will say, however, that I believe that we could have better knowledge of human nature, and of the human thinking process, and human emotions. But I see the 20th century as a lost period of non-discovery. At some point, the political agenda will be cast aside, and real work will be done in the field.

I imagine huge leaps in understanding would be possible, if we could just see the field without blinders.

I knewthat and I didn't need to take a survey or get a doctorate in sociology.

I don't know, they seem like they would fit right in with all of the "real" scientists who are members of the global warming cult.

The human brain and its functioning can be studied scientifically.

“But I see the 20th century as a lost period of non-discovery.”

It’s only recently that we’ve begun to understand how the human brain works. It used to be all humours and superegos and understanding through analogy. Now we are studying it scientifically, as in using the scientific method.

This whole thing reminds me of the Time magazine that breathlessly reported:

BOYS AND GIRLS ARE DIFFERENT!

This is just a brain fart by someone on the left. It will go away soon.
