Several sources familiar with the ongoing investigation tell WTOP fire and police investigators believe the radiator in Turton's 2008 BMW X5 was punctured when it rolled into a workbench. The halogen headlights, which emit a bluish light and illuminate the road better than conventional headlights, stayed on after the radiator was punctured.

“The xenon lamps...”

Except the 2008 BMX X5 has sealed HALOGEN bulbs.

Put me in the category of someone who finds those new bluish halogen headlights to be a road hazard to oncoming traffic. Why the DOT approved them is beyond me.

Those lights are ridiculous and a hazard. DOT is run by complete morons.

From the original report:

Most of the fire was contained to the garage area.

A source familiar with the investigation tells WTOP the accident was likely a slow-speed collision. There were no skid marks.

It is still unclear how fire started, but a neighbor says the car caught fire while backing out of the driveway behind the house.

Neighbors say Turton, 37, was leaving for an early morning flight at the time of the accident.

Other people were in the home at the time, the source says. Given the configuration of the house and garage, they may not have been aware of the incident.

So how does a car backing out hit a workbench which somehow punctures the headlights causing a fatal fire, while leaving the victim unable to a) call for help and b) unable to get out of the car? Just asking...

Of course back in the Clinton era we had an uninterrupted string of mysterious deaths. I’ve been a bit surprised that this has not really happened (to my knowledge) under the Baraqqi regime.

Maybe it’s just starting to unfold.

Could she have possibly have started the car in the garage with the door closed? It looks like the door was pulled off. That's the only thing I can think of with her being unconscious.

"When properly translated means that we will never see this technology used in Government Motors cars."

I think (and I'm too lazy to look it up), the technology was pioneered by GM and offered as an option on Cadillacs some years ago. It was dropped b/c of cost and lack of demand. It's currently available on several high-end Euro and Japanese cars. Like BMW.

But no, this doesn't fit with the current GM focus -- such as the "Big Brother" event recorders included in each GM car.

it gets a flammable label if the flash point is below 73F. With a flash point of 240, it would be “combustible”.

You can burn ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in most antifreeze. Some of those under-the-chafing-dish things are not Sterno but EtGlycol with a wick.

Jet A has a flash point of 100F, corn oil about 450F (don’t try to cook french fries in jet A, is what that means).

So ethylene glycol is more flammable than cooking oil and much less flammable than jet fuel or kerosene.

IIRC, she was on her way to the airport and the rest of the family was asleep. I would assume one of the first things the fire department would do would get anyone out of the house.

I can understand her husband saying everyone was accounted for as a first response while in a fog trying to process what was going on.

But once the adrenalin started flowing, if someone mentioned the SUV IN the garage he should have known immediately something wasn’t right. If her car was in the garage, where was she?

.......but, once the Fire Department showed up...would ANYONE IN THAT ATTACHED HOUSE realize...is that Ashley’s car? Where is Ashley? And wouldn’t they IMMEDIATELY tell some first responder at the scene...my wife was supposed to be driving that car!!! So why the big, surprise, when the smoke literally cleared, that ‘there is a body inside the car.’Was she supposed to leave by taxi (for the alleged flight? has the flight info been verified?). Was the WH aide husband supposed to take that car that day?

That is such an honest, stunned sounding statement by a Fire Department professional (who has probably seen many awful things) but was ‘surprised’ to find someone in the car.

Yep, it doesn't add up. Seems the vehicle was partially out of the garage and there was another car (looks like it was somewhat in her way) sitting in the driveway.

The back of the BMW doesn't look damaged, gas tank not exploded, windows don't look smoky. If she was backing up, how did she damage the radiator unless she was pulling back in to avoid the car in the driveway? If the workbench was at the rear of the garage, she would have had to make contact with it going forward, not in reverse.

The antifreeze we use in cars is mostly a mixture of water and ethylene glycol.

Are you sure she was using that kind? Some greenies use other types.

I just checked, and on the 2008 BMW X5 Halogen headlights were standard equipment, but Xenon steering linked lights were available as an option.

Just some docs that might be relevant...

One type of BMW antifreeze:

Note, flashpoint is 250F.

National Fire Protection Association alert on antifreeze flammability (propylene glycol and glycerine):

I thought it was funny the report said that 240 was far above 212 (the boiling point of water).

Whoever wrote that line probably had "100C" in mind.

Amazing, isn’t it. Authorities were able to link Jack Wheeler with the ‘arson’ across the street almost immediately and yet, no one can begin to explain this fire.

Of course, if foul play was suspected (ie no smoke in lungs) the DC authorities might be playing a game of cat & mouse.

"Yeah, I remember when that happened to me. The car rolled at .00002 mph and struck a fly on the wall. I was stricken and couldn’t get out. Then the antifreeze combined with grass fertilizer in the garage and the whole thing exploded. I burned to death. But I’ll tell you, I’ll never do that again!"

You too?

“Antifreeze is flammable, although it catches fire at 240 degrees Fahrenheit...”

This is what passes for journalism today.

Per the link below

e-glycol ignites at 800 degrees and p-glychol at 700 degrees
which is why all the cars on the road and not in flames right now.

#####

They may not have been aware of the incident, but “they” could hardly have slept through fire engines wailing as they approached the fire.

The engines must have gotten there in record time because those ancient wooden porches do not even look scorched. Even if they were modern iron reproductions, they totally escaped damage.

Perhaps people who live near the Capitol are immune from noticing sirens, since so many daily motorcades are preceded by them - but not at 5am.
