The first picture has been released of Meryl Streep playing Baroness Thatcher in The Iron Lady, the forthcoming Hollywood film about the former British prime minister's life.
The biopic, which also stars Jim Broadbent as Lady Thatcher's husband Sir Denis, began filming at the end of January.
It is being made by Pathe and Film4 and is directed by British director Phyllida Lloyd, who is best known for her theatre work.
Streep, one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, was seen as one of the few women capable of convincingly playing Lady Thatcher.
However, producers faced concerns over how an American would be received playing the part, and suggestions that the role should have gone go to a British actress.
The film will focus mainly on the period immediately prior to the Falklands war. . . .

The earrings and necklace are spot on. That’s it.
Last thing I want to see is more leftwing spin
albie ~ My choice wouldve been Bo Derek. At least shes a conservative.
Hollywood would cast Michael Moore as Ronald Reagan.
This will be another Hollywood smear job - bank on it. The left in the UK still hates Thatcher.
Look at the kindness and wisdom in the eyes of Lady Thatcher. Compare that to the deer in the headlights look Streep is portraying. That alone is a smear job.
Streep is one of the few real actresses left in Hollyweird today. Ya want Britney Spears to play Lady Thatcher?
Looking at the two photos side-by-side the likeness is close enough....and like any veteran actress Streep will turn into the Prime Minister before our very eyes.
Really, did Errol Flynn look like General Custer? Who cares! I actually hoped Custer would have looked like Flynn. But Flynn played him to the hilt with zest and flair and hunkiness and darn good dramatic acting....and that, my friends, is why the marvelous bio-pics of the thirties and forties were such a big part of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
(P.S....it's more important to pay attention to what some lefty screen writers write for the actors to say in this movie. As Shakespeare might have said, "Herein may lie the rub")

Conservatives can role play Liberals because, at root, all that means is acting selfish, immature, close-minded and refusing to take responsibility for anything. In other words, acting like a spoiled brat of a five year old. Since we have all been five years old brats at one time, and since all have had experience dealing with such, it’s not that difficult. All we have to do is pretend to regress to that level.
Liberals, on the other hand, have difficulty playing Conservatives because that would mean acting mature, reasonable, even-handed and acknowledging that acts have consequences and that people must be held responsible for their own success or lack thereof. In other words, they have to act like adults — and they just do not know how. They would have to mature past their current level in order to play that kind of role — but if they did that, they wouldn’t be Liberals anymore.

"Left-wing fantasy: The film will portray Thatcher as a delusional dementia sufferer, even if she remains active, for instance visiting David Cameron recently.
“Streep, one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, was seen as one of the few women capable of convincingly playing Lady Thatcher”
No, she is seen as one of the few—maybe the only, I don’t really know that world all that well—actresses of her age who can headline a hit movie. Oh, and she’s famous for doing accents.
Liberal hit piece? I don't know, but Mamma Mia was just stupid. I'm embarrassed to admit I actually saw that in a movie theater.
Meryl Streep looks clueless... is the movie going to be a spoof?
Thatcher looks far from clueless in her pic. She’s all business with just a little smile.
Who’s playing Reagan? I heard something about Robert Forster recently—which would be fine with me—but I don’t know if it was in connection to this film.

Streep is a fine actress but even she couldn’t save THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE.
Get a grip. It's a movie.
Whatever happened to simple, clever conversation?
