Students publish Spanish-language newspaper
McDowell News ^ | Britt Combs

A new voice for the Spanish-speaking community is being heard at McDowell High School. Spanish-speaking students in McDowell have launched the county’s newest newspaper.

Under the guidance of English-as-a-second-language instructor Marriette Vandersluijs, the kids in her Spanish-for-native-Spanish-speakers class launched La Conexxion Latina in November. The first edition had eight color pages with an emphasis on the views and perspective of the McDowell High School Hispanic students, their families and the community in general. Virtually all of the text is in Spanish.

A hot topic currently is the federal DREAM Act, a House-passed bill meant to provide a path to higher education and citizenship for the kids of illegal immigrants. The bill is currently awaiting passage in the Senate.

La Conexxion Latina staff conducted man-on-the-street interviews and included some quotations as a sidebar to their story (the Gringo: "I think it is okay to pass the dream act to help those who are illegal," reads a translation), a breakdown of the DREAM Act's contents and an update on its legislative history, as well as what the act could mean to some local Hispanic kids and their chances of earning a higher degree.

I can’t find much on Marriette Vandersluijs, the teacher, but I would like to know if this idiot was born in the U.S.?

How is writing a newspaper in Spanish supposed to help students learn English, which is ostensibly the point of ESOL classes. What about the ESOL students who are not native speakers of Spanish. How will this help them to learn English?

The foreign language dept at the HS ONLY offers spanish and Latin.

My sons are being forced to learn this language and it angers me to no end. There in NOTHING in my history that would compel me to want to learn spanish have my children learn it.

Romance languages take some study. Once you get the hang of it, its easy... the lexical similarity among Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian makes for mutual intelligibility as they are all descended from the Vulgar Latin of the late Roman Empire that evolved into a number of regional dialects.

Any talk against these poor deserving illegals is just racist.

I hope they are given free breakfast, lunch and dinner before their free special bus rides to and from their section 8 homes and occasionally to Disneyland like they do for them their English as a second language classes here. It makes them feel like they are special, you know.

And be sure to remind them it’s time to apply for their Unearned Income Tax Credit from their friendly neighborhood government money redistribution center.

No wonder they pour across our borders and vote Democrat.

“My sons are being forced to learn this language and it angers me to no end.”

Went to Prep School in the early 60s. All Freshmen had to take Latin. I hated it! After that year, we had our choice of Spanish, German, or French. I guess you take Spanish if you want to have business discussions with your gardener. I think my old school now also offers Mandarin.

I'll give a common example:

English: She opened the window in the morning.

Latin:Aperiens fenestram, mane.

Portuguese: Ela abriu a janela de manhã.

Spanish: Abrió la ventana de la mañana.

French: Elle ouvrit la fenêtre le matin.

Italian: Ha aperto la finestra al mattino.

Romanian: Ea a deschis fereastra dimineata.

This might teach them a little bit about languages, at least. If it’s a Spanish class exercise, that’s fine, and maybe they’ll learn something that will be generally applicable. We are not even teaching native English speakers in their English classes about English grammar. Way too busy with “gay rights.”

Most Hispanics speak an abysmal Spanish (called “de la abuela,” grandmother Spanish, in other words, the few words any immigrant has always need to communicate with his non-English speaking grandparents, mostly nouns and a few phrases like ‘I love you, Granny,’ in the respective language).

If this involves English speakers as well, it could actually teach them something about grammatical structure and the nuts and bolts of a language.

Spanglish and other mangled Romance languages are frowned upon by purists. Who wants to speak a bastardized language?

Growing up in canada, learning French was part of the curriculum and part of our heritage. If someone forced me to learn a language which has no bearing on my life except for political-correctness and due to someone’s liberal white-guilt, I would move away from that district.

Canada is a bilingual country. Most Canadians speak only English but because Quebec is the only predominantly French speaking province in Canada, the federal government and private enterprise has to provide services in both languages.

Sounds more like a junior “La Voz de Aztlan”.

More of the Aztlan/Reconquista “Give Illegal Aliens Amnesty” crap. I am so tired of it

Now you know the REAL reason for the ‘actual” creation of Canada. Because the Quebecers placed a gun on the rest of the provinces if there is no French, we split. You have no idea how many damn useless but mandatory French channels on the west coast are being offered on cable..

Not useless. There are Francophone minority communities throughout Canada and they can understand what’s being broadcast...
