Could Friday night be one of those defining moments in the career — and potential presidential candidacy — of Sarah Palin?
Egypt is on the brink of a revolution that could transform American and global foreign policy for years — a crisis that is testing President Obama and makes clear the life-and-death stakes for anyone who might think about replacing him.
And as it happens, Ms. Palin, the former governor of Alaska, is scheduled to give a major speech Friday night at the Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara, Calif., in honor of what would have been the 40th president’s 100th birthday.
It’s possible that Ms. Palin could use the opportunity to deliver a broadly conceived foreign policy speech that uses the turmoil in Egypt to advance an understanding of her national security beliefs that goes beyond her use of Twitter messages and Facebook posts.
Mr. Reagan, after all, was a onetime governor (and actor) who had little foreign policy experience when he ran for president. And yet his presidency was in some ways defined by the manner in which he confronted the changing world around him.
The history books recall Mr. Reagan’s confrontations with the Soviet Union, his push to build a missile defense system, his clandestine support of the Contras in Nicaragua, bombings in Libya and the brief war in Grenada.
Ms. Palin has likewise been criticized for a lack of sophistication when it comes to foreign policy. During the 2008 campaign, critics mocked an answer she gave about Russia so much that a phrase from a Saturday Night Live skit — “I can see Russia from my house” — took on an apocryphal resonance.

Here's part of my post for the LIVE thread.

Looks like the prior program is about the FCC. Click the graphic to go to C-SPAN's schedule.
Me too!!
I’m so glad that someone at the New York Times is concerned about whether Sarah uses this speech to impart her grasp of foreign policy.
I hope we get a good look at the shoes she wears tonight!
The Slimes are TRYING to set her up. They come up short every time but keep insisting on getting themselves SLAMMED DOWN by her. Drop a dime on them again, Sarah. They’ve earned it.
We now know what the NYT would LOVE Palin to do in her speech. The question is why?
Iteresting column for sure, but the writer should know that she has already worked very hard on this special speech, so whatever she says won’t have anything to do with his column or input from any journ0lists or journalists.
I have a radio but unless they are simulcasting it on NPR, I can’t get a station. I’m 350 miles out in the Alaska bush. Nearest radio station with any reception is a 10 watter broadcasting NPR and gospel music.
I think we’ll be proved right. She knows precisely why she’s there to speak and she wants to honor President Reagan. Like you, I can barely wait for this special speech! I feel like posting the LIVE thread now....LOL.
I believe tonight will be Zer0’s woodshed moment. Where President Ronald Reagan was the crusader against world Communism, Sarah Palin will take up the torch as the crusader against Marxist Socialism/Radical Muslimism.
Those who stand around and let what is going on in the Middle East should be taken to the woodshed. President Ronald Reagan was not only our leader, but the leader of the free world. In Zer0’s case he is “not here,” just as he was “not here” when he was in the U.S. Senate.
When/what network is the speech on please.
Spider to the fly? Yeah. She’s way too smart for the lamestream.
I’m sure we will. I’m guessing that she’ll wear a suit and probably pumps. She always dresses perfectly, imho.
LOL! That’s just about right. No sense in stepping right into it without a strong reason though.
She’ll get called wrong no matter what she does, even if she does what I suggest, but predicting the Egypt mess is a bad bet IMHO.
If the GOP should win in 2012 there should be new diplomatic agreements with al willing nations, that state what is accapable to both sides, then announce that citizens of those nations will be allowed to visit the U.S. for a maximum of 30 days a yr. others 30 days in 5 yrs., if at all. And advise all to watch your mouth, you WILL be taken seriously.
