George W. Bush Frets About New 'Nativism' (slanders us again)
National Journal ^ | January 31 | Jim O'Sullivan

A “rational” immigration policy will likely become law in the United States, but only after “some time,” former President George W. Bush said in a question-and-answer session aired Sunday night.

Evoking the “America first” policies that predated World War II, Bush said he fears that isolationism, nativism, and protectionism are creeping back into American life. “I’m a little concerned that we may be going through the same period,” Bush said at a Southern Methodist University forum recorded January 24.

George probably wanted to call us racists, but decided on a different word.

Video of this Bush clip Laura Ingraham played on the O'Reilly Factor: The former President discussed nativism, calling it an “evil triplet” of isolationism and protectionism, and noting how, in the 1920s, U.S. debate on immigration was guided to some degree by prejudice against the country’s wave of Jewish and Italian immigrants. “I’m a little concerned,” said Bush, “that we may be going through the same period.”

Hopefully we’ve learned our lesson and won’t nominate a big government globalist married to a pro-gay marriage, pro-abortion woman in 2012. We’ve seen how well that works out.

"America First"?

Hell yes.

America's people first.

America's economy first.

America's future first.

That's why we don't have foreigners voting, and don't elect foreigners.

Oh wait . . . I almost forget -- < /SARC!>

...was guided to some degree by prejudice against the country’s wave of Jewish and Italian immigrants.

Uh, Jorge, the Jews and Italians of the '20s didn't want to take over our country like your beloved messicans.

What's a matter, Jorge? Still crying over the fact that 9-11 kept you from building a "new America"?

And, to all you Bush lovers (if there are any left) explain how building "a new America" was any different than Obama wanting to transform America...?

THE "NEW AMERICAN"
..........<

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. I was gonna say, we could use a dose of isolationism, nativism, and protectionism. We’ve been sadly deficient.

They still fear us as WE THE PEOPLE can still win.

"Bush said he fears that isolationism, nativism, and protectionism are creeping back into American life" What's the difference between Obama and Bush? Apparently not much....

It has nothing to do with nativism, isolationism, etc... The most insulting part of this whole problem is the government not holding up its end of the bargain. It promised strict enforcement if we let certain people stay. It now wants to change the law it says is too strict and refuses to enforce it so we’re flooded with illegals and get all of the other probelms that come with that on the border. If that is not a narcissistic and arrogant approach to this issue, I don’t know what is. We have laws governing immigration and don’t need anymore.

Concur. But there are loons on this board who want to run his brother "Jebbie" for yet a third "Bush" presidency.

What these idiots can't grasp is that we want integration into American society and respect for it's LAWS. Not resistance and balkanization.

Any other assessment of the problem is either from someone who is lying for a political point or so far removed from the problem they can't identify it from 30,000 feet.

Sadly, he has a valid point, though I don’t think it’s as prevalant as he fears.

Agreed. Remember it was W who signed into law the campaign finance law. He also signed the bill that will eventually outlaw the incandescent light bulb. Oh let's not forget he approved the bill that mandates 35% of the US corn crop be directed towards the production of ethanol. That's working out real well isn't it. By the way how much did the size of the federal government shrink during his watch?

Miss me yet? Not really.

Not the first time GWB has disappointed me by being a RINO. Used to be just three major things (not pursuing the WOT way more aggressively, TARP, and the prescription drugs). Now this.

I really used to like the man. Ex-Presidents should keep a low profile (tho Jimmah and Bubba sure haven’t, either).
