"A controversy is brewing at San Franciscos City Hall over one of the newest members of the Board of Supervisors who refuses to recite the pledge of allegiance.
District Six Supervisor Jane Kim rises with her fellow supervisors for the Pledge of Allegiance at each session of the Board of Supervisors, but she does not recite the pledge and has not done so since taking office last month, Fox KTVU reports.
Kim said that she believes it is a personal decision of how to honor the flag and country and has been surprised by the criticism.
"I don't think our flag represents a nation where there's liberty and justice for all," argued Kim.

“I don’t think our flag represents a nation where there’s liberty and justice for all,” argued Kim.
In truth, this nation is NOT a perfect nation where “there’s liberty and justice for all”. Rather, it is a nation whose constitutional charter espouses liberty and justice for all, and sets forth the framework where its citizen inhabitants-all of them imperfect-have as their duty to strive toward that end.

Francis Bellamy (1855 - 1931), a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892. He was a Christian Socialist. In his Pledge, he is expressing the ideas of his first cousin, Edward Bellamy, author of the American socialist utopian novels, Looking Backward (1888) and Equality (1897).

Funny, when my grandparents came here they couldn't wait to be Americans. My father's father, Avram Helevi, somehow got through Ellis Island without having his name changed. He legally changed his name to Albert Levy in the late '40's. He was fluent in many languages (Ladino, Spanish, Greek, and Hebrew) but refused to speak any of them because he thought it would be disrespectful to his new home. Yeah, just like this Kim woman, eh ?

She is Korean. I would wonder if she is receiving any funding from any group that supports the North Korean government? I would look at that very carefully.

"Perfect Nation?" Man is incapable of perfection, but America is closer to it than any other country on this globe.
If Kim doesn't think so, she can do like her immigrant parents who brought her here as child: She can emigrate to a country she thinks is better.
And even though she owes this country a hell lot more than it owes her, I'll take the departure of her anti-American ass as evening the score.

I'm not all that taken with the Pledge myself: having children say it in school every day for twelve years is nothing but brainwashing. Better we should all take the Federal Oath (not sure what it's called - the one about enemies foreign and domestic) when we become adults, after lots of civics classes in school.

I never knew that.... Cool. Thank you!
It’s funny. I think I’ve learned more about America and American history from many of my fellow FReepers than I ever did from my lib public school teachers or marxist college professors.
I think I should sue, personally.

I'm the same way.
It's funny, though, one goes through twelve years of reciting the pledge and is never taught the history behind it.

I am absolutely shocked to learn about this. I’m shocked that the other supervisors DO recite the pledge. I thought those commies banned it along with prayer.
Coming soon, I’m sure.
These people really really hate America. They really do.

I don’t see the point either. Swear and oath at each meeting to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution for your State. That’s more relevant and substantive.
