[Click on the small images for a larger, higher resolution image of each]

The current USS Enterprise, CVN-65 will be decommissioned when CVN-78, the USS Gerald R. Ford is commissioned into the fleet. This will leave the high seas without a US aircraft carrier named Enterprise. The Big-E has been plowing the waves of the high seas for the last fifty and more years in defense of US National interests, and doing so successfully.

In World War II, the USS Enterprise, a Yorktown Class aircraft carrier, CV-6, was the most highly decorated vessel of the war, and the most highly decorated combat vessel in US Navy history.

It is critical that this proud tradition of service, honor and distinction continue.

Please click the first picture above and sign your name to the petition requesting this...and email, forward, blog, twitter, facebook, and share it with our friends and ask them to do the same.

We need hundreds of thousands of signatures to make this a reality.

The US Naval Institute, the Tailhook Association, and US Navy veterans had an initial petition HERE last year. but it only gained a few thousand signatures and has since been discontinued.

It deserves better and needs more exposure. Let's support our veterans and rise up as citizens and add tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands more so our elected and appointed officilas will respond in the affirmative.

Of course, even the Continental Navy had a number of ships named after living, active politicians and generals. There was Trumbull, Montgomery, and General Gates, Deane, Franklin, at least four Washingtons and even a Lady Washington. Some of those cases were possibly due to the fact that many of those ships were privately funded by those same politicians.

They didn't seem to be very lucky names, though - the majority of those ships were captured or destroyed during the war. Of course, Continental Navy ships suffered a very high rate of attrition anyway, but maybe they learned their lesson - other than a number of ships named after Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison, only a handful of post-Revolutionary US Navy ships were named for living Americans until the 1980s.

Oops, I forgot to mention the two Hancocks, which were even more likely to have been funded by Hancock himself, since he was long in the shipping and privateering business.

Sorry Jeff. I prefer the U.S.S. JOHN FORD.

Oh, and one final postscript. Two ships named for Adams and one named for Madison were commissioned with those names while their respective namesakes were sitting Presidents.

So, as distasteful as the modern custom is, it doesn't seem as though the Founding Fathers were all that averse to it. Surprisingly, though, there were no ships named for George Washington commissioned during his Presidency.

The film director? Some great films.

But, since CVN-78, the 1st of class is already the Gerald R. Ford, or the USS Ford, I do not believe they will name the second one, CVN-79, after another Ford, and by that time the Enterprise will already have been decommissioned and I would love to see the Enterprise back at sea as an aircraft carrier.

Yes, the film director who risked his life to get WW II on camera. But I agree, too close to Jerry’s boat!

Just discovered this thread, Jeff, and signed the petition. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. It’s great also to see you doing so well. Rest assured I’ll keep you in my prayers for your continuing recovery.

I too am tired of naming our ships after living politicians. Let’s hope we can break this pattern.

Thanks to each of you for your prayers and encouragement for my health condition.

It’s a long, slow, and difficult road, but I am so grateful to be on it accrding to God’s will and give Him the thanks, along with all those who have prayed and exerted their faith and kindness on our behalf. Particularly my wife who has been an angel through all of this.

We sure are only slowly gathering names for this petition...so please continue to spread it around.

I’d sure hate to see the name Enterprise not plowing the waves as an Aircraft Carrier after so many years and such a rich tradition and heritage!
