Monster Winter Storm Takes Aim at One-Third of U.S. (Live Thread)

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.

Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.

"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."

Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

It's the calm before the storm here in Hershey.

Loved that little Murrysville Golf Course. Hilly with a blind par 3. Hope they get the lifts fixed over at that Monroeville ski area. Oh wait, I think it's county run, forget it. We get weather reports out of Penn State here where the interns have weather orgasms showing us spaghetti projections.
Elliott Abrams and Joe Bastardi would be proud.
This from the school that gave us the hockey stick projections and deleted information that proved that global warming is a hoax.
And I'm to believe them?

Having lived throughout Pa. it’s interesting seeing names of communities I’m familiar with on this thread. For about 6 months my business took me to Hershey often. Nice community for as little of it I saw. Interesting too there is a difference in the people from Eastern Pa. and Western Pa.

Now, for some reason, snow is a big deal. What am I missing?

The sissification of America.

In a hotel room overlooking I-35 in Dallas. Loking forward to watching some “car hockey” come daybreak.

Are you in the path of this storm? You don’t have you state on your homepage.

Only the government can take something profitable and lose money. Boyce park jobs have always been patronage with the odor of union corruption. Great place for mountain biking. They haven't screwed that up yet.

Don't know if your referring Hershey to being in Eastern PA. Don't do that. We are Southcentral PA.
As a former Burgher I want nothing to do with the Philly area.

Just checking the weather it looks like a two part storm for our area. The second part with the ice looks nasty.

Because we can't afford them.

So? Who said you needed a new one?

Buy a used one. Probably even more effective at fixing the bad-weather problem! (Assuming AGW is correct, of course.)

Your right.....Hershey is nowhere near anything like the East coast...especially Phila. I had to go to meetings in Phila. for three days and couldnt wait to leave!

I also lived in Lancaster for almost three years...

My Hometown was in Bradford county....up in Gods country. Just 23 miles from the NY border.

LOL! Poor Al. His 15 minutes are up.

Not as long as there are idiots (or stockholders who stand to profit from) who still buy into the hoax. Is he sequestered somewhere until summer? Why aren't the lapdog media guesting him on their shows (especially now) - after all, isn't he one of their primary sources for green programming!

Various websites use descriptive terms such as co2 snow job, globaloney and the great goreaster.

I’m in FW, read your comment, got dressed, put my hat and coat on, went out and moved the car into the driveway out of the way of the “hockey players”.

You might have more fun if your room overlooked the 635.
Enjoy your visit.

Thanks.

Home Depot now sells a great kerosene heater for indoors, range about $140. We have all electric house, with a fireplace insert, in which I can put a grill and cook if necessary.

When I know there is a storm such as this, I cook up some things that only will take a little heating, soups, baked potato's, etc.

We bought that kerosene heater just in case the electricity went out, works great. One fill up lasts about 8 hours.

And elsewhere we are having moderate winter temps in Alaska with almost no accumulations of snowfall, especially here in Wasilla.

The Iditarod has for over the last 5 years has had to start OTHER than the traditional re-start in Wasilla, they have to truck in snow for the dogs to run on in Anchorage for the TV “start” but the traditional start has been moving steadily north every year.

Because we are losing snowfall in South Central Alaska.

At least you guys in the lower 48 don’t have our literal 6 months of winter. Take care, have heat and power backups, plenty of games, a portable radio, food and water.

Unless its an emergency stay off the roads.

In my part of northern VA the forecast keep changing. Yesterday I thought we were going to be spared with rain and only “trace” amounts of ice. The prediction is now 1/4” of ice. Thankfully the tree trimming crews did their thing this year so that should help a little with the power lines.

Anyone know if water softener salt is an okay option for deicing my walkway?

Stay home and curdle up with a good book.

You may chose to curdle up (like a glass of bad milk) with a good book, but I prefer to curl up with a book. (just kidding but i couldn't resist)

I’m in a suburb of Chicago, and am glad that I am now retired. Otherwise, I would be commuting to Chicago, about 30 miles away from my condo, and dreading having to go out and drive to work in rotten weather, which I had to do for years. No more. Now I stock in supplies ahead of time, sit back in my recliner w/my cup of tea/coffee, read my Kindle, freep, watch TV and/or doze off. Occasionally I look out my sliding glass windows in the living room and watch the blizzard do its thing. Actually, it is very beautiful to look at, as long as you don’t have to go out in it. The storm will start to hit today (Tues) and Wed is when we are supposed to get really whomped. But we Midwesterners are a hardy lot, very used to snowfall, and take it all in stride. I always chuckle when I hear how Wash. D.C. practically shuts down with only a couple of inches of snowfall.
