Monster Winter Storm Takes Aim at One-Third of U.S. (Live Thread)

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.

Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.

"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."

Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

If warmer than average weather is proof of global warming, and colder than average weather is proof of global warming, what circumstances could we say proves that the weather currently being experienced is not global warming?

Ummm. Haven't you gotten the memo? Since a lefty went to the North Pole to prove how much global warming is melting everything and came back with frostbite (what a ditz) it's no longer global warming, it's 'climate change' so they can cover all the bases. (true story)

Get with the program, program!! ;)

It’s 72 right now in Tampa. Expected high for today is 75 here in Tampa. 80 degrees inland.

We filled the bird feeder for the birds last night before all this started and sprinkled some on the ground for the local squirrel that lives in a tree right outside our front window. Poor little things.

It hasn’t really been as bad as we were hearing it was going to be. We have a bit of wind, but thank goodness it’s dry out there. The temp is down a lot from yesterday—but it is winter, so I suppose that’s to be expected.

Wow. Look at all that swirl and how it's pulling all the moisture straight up from the Gulf!

Tat's an UGLY picture!

I’m in the north end of that dry slot currently and I would say I have about 18” now.

The back side is going to whip around and whack me good. I just hope it blows the snow OFF the boat dock roof instead of blowing it over. The boat is in it on a lift and I would be really ticked.

I am not going to shovel the steps down there and go out on the dock. Falling in the water kept open by my de-icer would be a touch cold at 12 degrees and good wind.

I’m in Illinois 50 miles SW of Chicago. I wasn’t trying to be rude or bossy, just thought it would be helpful if we all put our state in our posts as we posted weather updates!

Hard to believe it is still pulling moisture from the Gulf at this point. No wonder they are saying snow all nite for most of us!

I’m glad to see the almost clear sky, but that means quicker cooling off later. We will get some heat from the lake water since the wind is from the NW. The wife talked about letting our two cats into the laundry room tonight instead of making them stay in the garage.

Hope your hubby gets home safely. That is one of the first things I thought of today was about my poor mailman!

>>Poor little things.

I know. The snow is up to my waist from previous storms (CT) and I can’t get to the birdfeeder or shed where I keep the feed, so I haven’t be able to feed the birds since mid-Dec.

We are supposed to get another 18” of wet snow, but possibly freezing rain (which would be worse IMO). Glad I cleared the roof of the 2-3 feet up there.

Stay safe everyone.

In anticipation of the second hit, I took the lull to fill the big bird feeder after knocking the snow off and out of it.

I now am the most popular human in the little cove. Thirty to fifty birds flying in and out constantly.

Here in Indy we’re getting bb size ice pellets.
That’s great because they don’t stick on trees or power lines.
(last night’s freezing rain built up about a quarter inch on everything)
Hopefully it stays in the pellet form for the duration of the heaviest precip.

Winds are 20-30 mph.
No flights in or outbound at least until tomw.

I'd rather deal with the snow, ice will take out power lines, can't imagine what those people will do, in these cold temps!

Hope yours stays pellets too and you don't lose power.

You do what I used to although none of them camped on the property that I know of. One of our sweetest cats is from a family who take care of an outdoor cat famliy.
