Monster Winter Storm Takes Aim at One-Third of U.S. (Live Thread)

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.

Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.

"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."

Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

We’re in the 18”-20”, map doesn’t go any higher than that.

Monstorm not affecting us yet here in North Central PA. Just one inch of slushy snow this morning. No ice. Roads passable.

Of course there will be fatal accidents today all over the hilly back roads because of idiots who drive too fast for conditions, or impaired by drugs and/or alcohol!

Good luck to those who are bearing the brunt of the storm.

I am relieved that my winter grandbaby was born last Friday, in between storms. No trouble getting to the hospital. She is a 7 lb. beauty named Ramona!

Don't you just love the idiots who think they can defy mother nature & go flying down the roads??? That's ok, you usually see them in the ditch & can drive by & laugh at them, but if they're on drugs or drunk, do they even care????

Good thing your gbaby was born last week!!! Not a good time to be trying to rush to a hospital!!

A friend of mine is planning on driving across the country from Maryland to California this week. I have no idea how he’s going to be able to do that.

He should take the most southern route.

That friend would be wise to take a route down to Tennesee and cross south of there.

Bless you for feeding the strays in this weather. We used to have a few strays years ago, not a one these days.

Most schools in the North West Ohio/Southeast Michigan canceled the whole day, as did several third shifts/first shifts for Wed, at factories. One never knows exactly when a storm will hit. Don’t want the kids driving in it.

I leave dry food in the barn. It’s falling down and the roof leaks but I have a tarp over my wagon and made a bed for them underneath. When they want soft food, they make sure that I see them....the little beggars! lol

Ours get out in about an hour, it's looking bad out there, like I said, they should have let them out at noon! Now it's going to be a long bus ride for many of the kids.

This area, south of Chicago, rarely cancels school, guess they like us to tough it out!!! Heck, maybe they'll have school tomorrow!!!

Hope your power does not go out.

Stay warm and safe.....that goes for all Freepers - and their loved ones and pets - in the path of this wicked weather.

Fortunately no one has been injured in the roof collapses. People don’t usually get hurt in care accidents, either, because they are going too slowly. However, I heard on radio that on woman was killed as a result of the snow, didn’t hear how.

Hubby clears a widow neighbor’s driveway every year and he’s really paying his dues this season, top 4 snowiest so far (I think we’ll make the top 3 spot.

Make sure your neighbors are okay.

I doubt we’ll be able to get out of our driveway tomorrow, they can have school if they want to, my kids won’t be there.
