Monster Winter Storm Takes Aim at One-Third of U.S. (Live Thread)

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.

Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.

"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."

Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

Listen, I didn’t mean anything by my comment. Of course I wish everyone who will be affected by this monster storm to be safe and be careful.

Check this photo taken by NASA on the monsterstorm.

It looks an big as any hurricane!

We use the snowplow on our atv to try and keep something scraped for him. I keep telling my hubby I’d like to have a kids wading pool in the garage filled with dead leaves (his favorite thing to go on), so I can just let him out into the garage. hubby won’t go for it - yet. :)

It is impressive. Just had the fifth roof collapse in the area and pray hard for people in auto accidents and any who lose power.

I don't mind the temperatures. Everybody is leery of treacherous driving.

That is a marvelous idea!
They do have litter boxes for dogs. Maybe one of those instead of the pool? You could still use the leaves instead of the litter.

Roof collapses are horrible. I also worry about those who have medical emergencies in this weather. It’s amazing what an impact these big storms can have. As in your photo, just poor visibility due to snow accumulation can be deadly. Elderly people are at a real disadvantage when it comes to coping with the physical demands of a heavy snowfall. I never really thought much about this kind of thing when I was younger, but it’s not all a lark for everyone.

He would need more room than that. He is only 10 pounds but he likes to spread it around!

Missouri reporting.

In the center of Missouri at Lake of the Ozarks in the center of the state

It reminds me of February 08 at Lake Tahoe at the height of snow season rather than the Lake of the Ozarks.

Three inches at 7 AM and at 12:39 we have about 14 to 16 inches depending on the spot I measure. It looks like my boat dock has a foot of snow across the whole roof and that is not what it was designed to carry.

The winds are now picking up to 30 mph and the snow will continue heavy for about five more hours. The 20 in projection may be low for here.

The local bird population is glad I am here today to give them a little fuel. The shoveling is fairly easy for the depth but the wind picking up is making it a 45 minute dose at the max for this old guy.

Just 50 miles south along I-44 they have a third the snow but ice/sleet of 1/2 underlaying it.

It would help if everyone posted their state or location when posting pictures, just an idea.

Shoveling in the wind is awful!! When it blows like that it cuts at any exposed skin.

Keep checking in.

WOW! It looks like the Europe/Asian Continent got pasted on the U.S. Odd. There’s so many colors there it looks like a mosaic.

Thanks for your Missouri report. I think the predictions for everywhere were low, considering the size of the storm on the map!

I’m supposed to drive 70 miles to Fort Leonard Wood tomorrow and then about 150 miles up to St. Louis.

I think I will take a shovel in the Tahoe.

Thanks for the update.

CNY has nothing yet. We got a few inches of snow this morning but the monster is supposed to hit late this evening.

You may want to take some blankets, candles, matches, food, flashlight, water, etc. You might be LIVING in that Tahoe for awhile.
