COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.
Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.
"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."
Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

That looks nasty.
The physical evidence here is countless buzzards. We always have many that winter over here but this morning there are what seem to be hundreds.
The Turkey Vultures come here ahead of winter weather and storms and today there are many many more than ever seen before.
One can only wonder how they learned that the big oak trees in a residential neighborhood are a safe refuge from Yankeeland storms
We’re at 18. And he’s not answering his cellphone.
I hate that. I’m a worrier.
I have to work outside. Also I have a PT Cruiser so I will have to walk there.
I worry too. He left it in the van for a potty call and to clear ice off the wipers.
Al Gore promised us palm trees.
It’s 72 right now in Tampa. Expected high for today is 75 here in Tampa. 80 degrees inland.
Now I’ll leave this thread! :-)
I just saw that and thought of a fuse. That will fuel some big snow here in Chicago.
My Pansies Died.
Lake effect snow starting on the North side. City is currently warning that Lake Shore Drive could see closures through the night.
I just volunteered to man the emergency response office from 0400-0800 in the morning.
You know, I don't go on the Southeast US hurricane threads gloating about the lovely weather we have up here in the northeast during your hurricane seasons.
If I appear on those threads at all, it's to offer prayers for my fellow FReepers that they stay safe and the hurricane misses them.
Where did you get that pict?
It’s tuesday 10:45 here in Jefferson city Mo. and snowing like crazy.
Actually, once he gets in to work, he’s OK. He can stay there if necessary. But the roads to and from?
There’s no good route. He said he was going to try to get home early so we’ll see what that means.
I told him he needs to plan on working from home tomorrow.
Right now, it stopped snowing and is very calm.
I got a little snow here in WNY. We’re waiting for the rest to get here. I’m on the borderline of the front we may get some rain/ice first THEN the snow. They are calling for 1-1.5 ft. of snow in my are.
Be safe you two.
I did shovel some but mr. mm is going to break out the global warming blower, no muffler notwithstanding.
I’ve been shoveling all this winter while it’s been sitting in the barn. The snow has been hitting us a couple inches at a time and shoveling is goof exercise.
We’re looking at 18 inches from this storm.
Not shoveling this time.
Thanks for the prayers for all of us.
