Jon M. Huntsman Jr., the U.S. ambassador to China, sent a resignation letter to President Barack Obama on Monday and now is likely to explore a Republican presidential bid, a close associate told POLITICO.
In a letter hand-delivered to the White House, the former Utah governor said that he wants to return to the United States by May, the associate said. The letter thanks Obama for the opportunity to serve the country and praises the U.S. embassy staff in Beijing.

He’s the media darling, touted as the next Romney. Why? They’re both for gay marriage.
But I can tell you this....John McCain was/is a U.S. Senator from AZ..and was a Senator during President Bush's term. Doesn't mean I think he's fit to be POTUS.
Romney was a Governor during GWB's term too.....I don't think he's anywhere near being POTUS material either.

He he he."The absolute low point of this campaign came last Friday, when a U.S. State Department delegation met with Chinese negotiators to discuss human rights. Apparently, our State Department felt it necessary to make their Chinese guests feel less bad about their own record of human rights abuses by repeatedly atoning for American “sins” – including, it seems, the Arizona immigration/pro-border security law. Asked if Arizona came up at all during the meeting, Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner answered:
“We brought it up early and often. It was mentioned in the first session, and as a troubling trend in our society and an indication that we have to deal with issues of discrimination or potential discrimination, and that these are issues very much being debated in our own society.”
Note that he said “We brought it up” – not the Chinese, but the U.S. State Department’s own delegation. Instead of grilling the Chinese about their appalling record on human rights, the State Department continued the unbelievable apology tour by raising “early and often” Arizona’s decision to secure our border.
Arizona’s law, which just mirrors the federal law, simply allows the police to ask those whom they have already stopped for some form of identification like a driver’s license. By what absurd stretch of the imagination is that the moral equivalent of China’s lack of freedoms, population controls (including forced abortions), censorship, and arbitrary detentions?
Surely our U.S. Ambassador to China, John Huntsman, must disagree with the Obama Administration’s continued apology tour? We have nothing to apologize for. If Administration officials want to apologize to anyone, apologize to the American people for the fact that after a year and a half in office, they still haven’t done anything to secure our borders, and they join our President in making false suggestions about Arizona’s effort."
At least he’ll siphon off votes from Romney

I have seen the light a bit from reading more on Jon H. He is less impressive than first impression.
I still don’t give 2 hoots if he’s a Mormon or not and the Mormon bashers don’t impress anyone except one another. I would feel much easier with a Mormon rather than the current kenyan communist.
This will be the Republican nomination in a nutshell. Explain to backwater folks why we need an educated person with business experience over someone who can fish great.

Obama may have, by trying to de-fang Huntsman as a threat in 2012 with the Ambassadorship to China, created a potent adversary.
This is a very good development for America and the GOP imo.
Our side is hopelessly clueless about modern China. We imagine China a land of aspiring freedom-seekers riding around on bicycles hoping to be like us.
Even George Herbert Walker Bush, was working from that frame of mind. It is so far from reality as to be naive.
China is now a superpower, a rival and a potential adversary. While we continue to build their military, their power and their continued rise through the historically bone-headed policy of unilateral surrender mis-named “free trade”.
Huntsman may at the moment be the one Republican presidential contender who actually gets it, about China.
Duncan Hunter is the last one we had.
This is becoming too important not to be among the skill sets our national leadership brings to the job. If Huntsman actually understands what is at stake - he would be a very important part of the GOP’s future.
Please let’s get beyond the Mitt assumptions, at least until shown otherwise. Huntsman just might be a different animal altogether. An American eagle, perhaps.
Consider him in the GOP cabinet, at very least. Trade representative. Perhaps even VP.
Huntsman and Palin could be a very formidable GOP team.
