SAN ANTONIO - Deborah Gonzalez says she is pretty heated with Hertz Rent A Car on San Pedro Avenue. Gonzales and her family say they found a loaded gun in a car they rented last week.
"I was horrified," said Gonzalez. "I couldn't even speak. I broke down crying because there was a loaded gun in my hands, and I don't know where it came from."
Gonzalez says she was riding in the car with her 2-year-old and 3-year-old grandchildren. She stumbled across the gun while picking up a child's shoe that fell under the driver's seat.
"I kept yanking, and yanking, and yanking because I could feel something."
Gonzalez says the incident has left her family traumatized.
"A lot of lives could have been ruined," said Gonzalez. "Mine! My kids! Lives could have been taken!"
A worker at the Hertz location would not give News 4 WOAI too many details, but said it is possible the car wasn't cleaned properly.
Gonzalez's family says that is no excuse for putting the children's safety at risk.
"It's very disappointing that a company that big could be so careless," said Gonzalez's husband, Marquis Stevens.
Gonzalez reported the gun to Converse Police Department. Officers say they have seized the gun and are treating it as a "found property" case.
The worried mom is now urging other drivers to use caution when renting a car.
News 4 WOAI is still waiting for an explanation about the incident from Hertz management.

REALLY? She is either lying or she should not be allowed to care for any children, What if something really bad happened? (like the gun discharging and hitting a kid) Would she just lose it, shut down, start crying, and let her child bleed to death? Any woman who would let their child bleed to death shouldn’t be allowed to HAVE ANY! Take her children away now!

This is just a ploy to get $$.
What would happen to this woman if she got into that care with her two-year old and discoved a small button on the floor!

Can you imagine if that two-year old found it, put it in his mouth and choked on it?
Would she similarly be reduced to a puddle tears and run to her attorney?

This would have been my first thought, but upon reflection I would have turned it in (avoiding the hysteria and the press)since it might be possible it was used in the commission of a crime.
But still, a free gun would have been tempting!

The only reason this is a story is because the White House has now made gun control an issue. Stories like this appear and get broad coverage because they support the meme that guns are a crisis problem.

At least not out in public without heavy medication and escorted by a capable and mature adult male. Modern life has obviously overwhelmed her ability to cope with reality.

Sounds like she is preparing her case so she can play litigation lottery.
I would never keep anyone else's property to begin with.
In the case of a firearm, I would be doubly motivated to return it, since I have no idea who the owner was or what they used it for.
The Enterprise Rent-A-Car guy at LAX told me that they routinely get cars back riddled with bullets.
