The U.S. is facing a "Sputnik moment" in which it must embrace investments in research and education, President Obama will say at his State of the Union address Tuesday night.
Obama, in excerpts of his speech released Tuesday evening, hearkened back to the Sputnik era, when the Russian satellite's 1957 launch set off the "space race" and a decade of intense technological development.
"Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik, we had no idea how wed beat them to the moon. The science wasnt there yet. NASA didnt even exist," Obama will say. "But after investing in better research and education, we didnt just surpass the Soviets; we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs."
"This is our generations Sputnik moment," he'll add.

Breaking: The AP has issued a speech correction: It is a Dupnik moment not a Sputnik moment.
Since we’re up on this Russia thing again, why is it that Obama’s mouthpiece spoke out against the terrorist attack at the Russian airport, an attack that was not openly claimed by Islamists at the time of the administration’s condemnation, but nothing was said about the terrorist attacks on the Christians in Egypt? Or any of the OTHER terrorist actions that were clearly Islamic in origin?
State of the Union indeed.
Investment in expenses does not create wealth -you can not educate your way out of bankruptcy. Building better roads or mass transit to the bankruptcy courthouse may save fuel but will not create jobs.
Becoming more efficient at not creating wealth while spending more than you take in only delays bankruptcy. Green energy simply put is energy that costs more -IT is the opposite of competitive and as such is a wealth destroyer.
Basic materials, energy, and manpower -and a good idea backed up by perseverance -THAT is what creates wealth -NOT GOVERNMENT!
I am so relieved to know “this is our Sputnik moment”.
Looking back to the 1950’s failed Commie
state for inspiration & instruction.
The SOTU speech is a real snooze. Even his phony new accent, lowering his voice to a breathless whisper to show feigned compassion is a sham.
The real surprise ... no standing O and very light scattered applause.
Bring on Paul Ryan for some intelligent, clear, honest & meaningful speech. Paul Ryan is a great speaker and a great American.

From the speech, it's clear that Zero is both thoroughly anti-American and an utter fool.
Tolley-Bahn? Pok-Ee-Stahn? The man is a mush-mouthed speaker at best and speaks something other than standard American English.
All I heard was him spouting nonsense about electric cars, choo-choo trains and windmills. He extolled the virtues of India, Brazil and China. From his lips, I heard not a word proclaiming American Exceptionalism.
I can't wait until President Palin delivers the State of the Union.
Paul Ryan hit a grand slam whereas the Usurper was left standing at the plate with three strikes and is out.
The contrast was remarkable. Zero spoke lovingly of a weaker homosexual military and American muzzies -- without a word about God, who Blessed America. Ryan made a point to respectfully honor and acknowledge our Lord. And Paul Ryan rightfully and proudly spoke of American Exceptionalism.
Paul Ryan was presidential tonight and O'Bambi was nothing more than a failed Sham Wow carnival pitchman.
Sputnik? More like Dupnik.
“Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik, we had no idea how wed beat them to the moon.”
The hell we didn’t. We got a plan and worked right on it because we knew what needed to be done. The people who designed it weren’t grad students waiting for inspiration. They were just waiting on the funding and the goal.
Anchor babies in research labs! That is something straight out of a Hollywood movie.
I say we ought to send Obama out in space ....and leave him there.
= SPEND!
I thought it was pissant-—who can’t understand why Sarah Palin stays aloft.
Funny, Hussien has been laboring for his “Tower of Babel moment” over the last two years of massive spending and huge goverment programs that not only don’t work but will further drain our nation’s resources.
Prom Night.....(Malkin)
He would compare us to commies
Did he say ENFORCE THE LAWS?
That reply nails it.
Continuing...
"We recognize that many Americans live far from dense population areas, and we can't afford to build more than a small amount of track. Therefore, we will be concentrating people into camps, where they will all have access to high-speed rail....we will begin packing those rail cars as soon as possible, just you watch!"
I agree; the “magic” was gone, the SOTU a real snooze, not even mustering enthusiasm from Dems.
Sham Wow! Sales have gone down a whole lot.
