Cantor invites Pelosi to be his seatmate at president's address By Russell Berman - 01/25/11 11:52 AM ET
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) invited Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to sit next to him at the State of the Union address, just hours after he criticized her for continuing to drive the ideological agenda instead of reaching across the aisle.
The invitation was made Monday evening through staffers for the two leaders, Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring said. Spokesmen for the former Speaker did not return an immediate request for comment.
The pairing would be among the more high-profile for an event that has in recent days been compared to a school dance, as lawmakers scurry to find cross-party seatmates for the presidents annual address. Instead of the traditional party-line seating arrangement, dozens of members have planned to sit with lawmakers from the other party as a symbol of renewed civility.
The Cantor-Pelosi duo could be awkward, however. The new GOP majority leader on Monday singled out Pelosi for unprompted criticism while he praised her chief deputy, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). Cantor and Hoyer were scheduled to have lunch Tuesday, and Cantor noted that while he and Hoyer met throughout the last Congress, he and Pelosi did not.
I would say that is in stark contrast to the now-minority leader, Cantor said. I would love to have the opportunity for her to engage in some type of working relationship so that we can actually deliver results. Thus far it seems she is continuing to drive the ideological agenda just the same as she did over the last four years.
As far back as June 2009, Cantor complained that then-Speaker Pelosi refused to meet with him.
Pelosis office said Monday she met regularly with her GOP counterpart, new Speaker John Boehner (Ohio).
It's important to set the record straight, spokesman Nadeam Elshami said. The fact is, Leader Pelosi has met with Speaker Boehner on numerous occasions both as Speaker and since he became Speaker, and offered to hold regular meetings. Democrats remain committed to working with Republicans to create jobs, strength the middle class and reduce the deficit."
Primary this asshole.
Or perhaps he’ll let her sit on his lap facing him.
In honor of the One’s civility, all Republicans should sit at the back of the chamber.
A first rate dog and pony show.
I wonder if he will get “lucky” ?
*gag*
That would be great, as would the deadpan explanations they could offer the media.
Unfortunately, this would have to happen in a parallel universe where Republicans have spines, political instincts and senses of humor.
We need a SECOND party.
I’ve resigned myself to just sit back and watch all of them from both parties destroy this country. Without a second party there’s nothing that can be done.
I am glad there are hundreds of channels to watch so I won’t have to watch this liar from Kenya and the GOP whimps.
I wonder how many times Boner will be so overwhelmed at the civility that he’ll cry during the speech. It would be funny if the democrat sitting nearest to him would pull out a hanky and hand it to him. And I blame him for this seating crap. He’s the leader. He should order the members to sit where they’re supposed to sit.
I’m beginning to think that Cantor is a jackass. But maybe, just maybe, he can lock in that moderate vote and then all those moderates can do the groundwork and make the contributions to get people like him reelected...right?
This kind of stupid, moronic stunt just makes me sick! Grow up Cantor...you weren’t sent to DC to make friends with that evil bitch! We send you and the rest of your caucus there to destroy what she’s imposed on this country the last 6 years....now get to it!
I just threw up.
Eric and the Real Girl. Are you sure he is not confused with a plastic blow up doll?
Gee, I wonder who she's gonna sit by??? They're icky, I want to sit over here. WTF? It's all bread and circus anyway.
We’re doomed.
How is this happening? we are showing unity with filthy commies??
"No, I don't have a (Democratic) date and I haven't tried to make a date," said Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Coweta County. "I'll be sitting on the majority side."
Still a couple of reps that haven't contracted swamp fever yet.
Awwwww.
Isnt that special.
All these Congresscritters wanna sit together.
What a Kumbaya moment.
[Poor Pubbies. They want so much to be liked by the MSM and the guys from across the aisle. They wanna be with the popular kids.]
Could be worse. Boehner has to sit with Joe Biden.
Cantor is such a POS!!
