NEW YORK - Sen. John McCain said the American people's message from the last message was clear: Cut government spending.
(snip)
"I had to campaign for re-election in the last election, and the message is clear: They want to stop the spending, it's out of control, that it mortgaged our children's futures - $14 trillion debt, it's unimaginable. And the consequences of our failure to get spending under control will be a bankrupt America.
"The size of government has doubled since 1999," he said. "The debt has gone up ... some $5 trillion."
McCain said significant cuts are required - and that no area of government should be off-limits.
Among the areas McCain said could be targeted for cuts: The Pentagon.
"There are cuts that can be made in some defense spending, although I hope those will be translated into savings," he said. "And across-the-board reductions in spending, no matter what it be. But agricultural subsidies is one of them. Waste and mismanagement. Medicare fraud.
"But we also have to look at the entitlements," he continued. "The two elephants in the room are called Social Security and Medicare. We have to address them and we have to reform them and we're going to have to make painful changes.
(snip)
He also advocated for more civility, but not at the expense of all else. "We can be more civil, but let's not lose our passion. Some of my favorite debates were with a guy named Ted Kennedy, who had passion like I haven't seen before or since."

McCain should have gone to jail, along with John Glen, with that financial scandal in the 1080s.
Enough with the whitewashing of political corrupt. It only brings, and breeds more, not to mention the senility factor of said pols.
And Arizona loves the guy ....
Who is this “McCain” guy? Sounds familiar. Does he sell used cars?
I can’t believe I voted for this guy.
I only did it because of Sarah, and because the alternative, was so bad.
It was really a choice between communist-lite (McCain) or full blown Maoist Revolutionaries (0bama-odinga). At least Palin would have been a wild card, had she been elected. It would have been near impossible for McCain to keep her on the plantation.
1) Start at zero
2) Prioritize “musts”, “shoulds” and “wants”
3) Budget so that outlays < receipts
How f'ing hard is that?
Is McCain under 0’s hypnosis or just plain brain dead? You be the judge.

Unless McPain is running for president again, what he says is unimportant, compared to what he does.
Since the Democrats control the senate until 2012, when they will likely lose control of the senate, and possibly the presidency, unless the Republican leadership throws up another &^$*&$*%! as a candidate, like Bob Dole or John McPain, then all calculations should be made based on how many Tea Party senators and representatives there are.
Since McPain intends to do his level best to block the Tea Party at every turn, it is likely that he wants to pretend to be in charge of government cutting, to *prevent* as much government cutting as possible.
This is a typical Washington treachery scheme.
Remember how McPain wanted to be at the forefront of the movement to stop illegal aliens? Instead of having the wall built, we got an utterly worthless and expensive “virtual wall”. McPain *insisting* that it would even be better than the real thing.
Lies. He didn’t want illegal aliens curtailed one bit. And he didn’t want anyone else stopping them either. So he pretended to be opposed to illegal aliens, while erecting hyper-expensive obstacle after obstacle to those who wanted to keep them out.
Not to just block any progress, but to spend so much money that there wouldn’t be any left for anyone else to use to stop the illegals.
A typical Washington treachery scheme.
All told, if conservatives want somebody to help them reduce the size of government, reduce the power of government, stop illegal aliens, get rid of Obamacare, stop bailouts, etc., etc., etc., they need to rely on conservatives, not RINOs with a proven track record of treachery, like John McPain.
Conservatives should stay on the conservative side of congress, and leave the leftists and the RINOs on their side. Crossing the aisle is a losing strategy.
Sarah Palin supported his re-election telling voters McCain is a conservative and wants the same things for America that she wants.
Hey Sarah, how’s this working out for you?
If Social Security and Medicare are not prevented from growing, it's not only f'ing hard, it's f'ing impossible.
Lots of Freepers think they are "musts" and sacrosanct.
Social security and medicare aren’t musts, they’re cancer. There are actually vary few things the government must spend money on.
“We should always be reminded that McInsane was the GOPs glorious nominee in 2008.”
Don’t rub it in!!
Hey! Teddy’s a good Democrat now.
McCain: Everything Must Be on Chopping Block

Everything? Politicians also?
I like the idea of closing the FEDERAL Dept of Education & letting the states run their own school with their own standards.
The One Size Fits All approach of the Feds isn’t working now & hasn’t since inception.
It is a bottomless money pit which produces nothing useful.
OK McStain let’s start cutting by CLOSING Luke AFB, Davis-Monthan AFBm FT Huachuca(sp?) and Yuma MCAS. Make your POS “state” pay for electing YOU!
Gee. I hope this hoarse-whispering, long time political hack will run for president.
“How in the world does that reprehensible worm, keep getting enough votes to stay in office?”
It’s got to be votor fraud. It’s hard to believe that many people are that stupid.

“We can be more civil, but let`s not lose our passion. Some of my favorite debates were with a guy named Ted Kennedy, who had passion like I haven`t seen before or since.” - Senator John McCain
Passion? Ted Kennedy?
Odd - I heard that Ted Kennedy left Mary Jo cold.....
.
As much as McLame makes me want to puke, I agree with him on this one. There are three steps that we need to take to NOW to show that we are series about restoring our fiscal health:
1. We need a 10% across the board spending cut, no excuses, no exceptions. This does not mean a 10% cut in the expected budget increase, but an actual decrease in spending from the previous budget year. And rather than fighting over which agencies, departments, and programs get cut, every agency, department, and program should share the pain equally with a 10% cut — and this includes the Department of Defense, as well as each Congressional office, judicial office, and executive office. There should not be a political debate in Congress as to what gets cut; rather the congressional directive to the head of each agency and department should be simply that “we are cutting your budget 10%. You have 120 days to make the cuts. If you can’t or are unwilling to do that, then (a) you’re fired; and (b) we will make the cuts for you, but instead of 10%, we’ll cut 15%. The choice is yours.”
2. In additon to the 10% across the board cuts, Congress needs to eliminate entire departments, agencies, and programs begining with the Department of Education, Department of Energy, agricultural subsidies, NPR/PBS subsidies, NEA subsidies, AMTRAK subsidies, etc. Again, this is in addition to the 10% across the board cuts.
3. The 50% of the taxpayers that do not pay taxes need to start paying taxes, even if the amount is only nominal. No one should get a tax credit if it results in a refund of taxes that they never paid in the first place.
a guy named Ted Kennedy, who had passion like I...
Was mcStain in one of the swimmers Waitress Samidges??
