Here’s the official announcement. I don’t get it.
We thought the speaking lineup for next Tuesday had been finalized, but there’s been a late addition. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) will deliver her own response to President Obama’s State of the Union address, to be webcast by the group Tea Party Express next Tuesday.
The group announced Bachmann’s upcoming remarks in an e-mail to supporters Friday afternoon…
It’s fitting that a tea party group would sponsor its own SOTU response: Obama is slated to focus on reining in the federal deficit, and that’s been a prime issue for the tea party movement since it was sparked by opposition to Obama’s stimulus and mortgage-rescue plan.
I could sort of understand this if the GOP had decided to break from tea party concerns in its own SOTU response, emphasizing foreign policy, say, instead of spending cuts and the coming debt apocalypse. It didn’t. It went directly at those concerns by tapping Paul Ryan to give the address, a choice greeted with wide approval from grassroots conservatives if our commenters are representative. So it’s not like America won’t be hearing about the hazards of big government on Tuesday night; on the contrary, Mr. Roadmap himself will be playing the part of the Ghost of Deficits Future. (In fact, The One himself might tackle this issue head-on in the SOTU.)
As such, having Bachmann deliver some sort of “shadow” conservative response to Obama will achieve one of two things. Either it’ll be redundant by duplicating most of the same points that Ryan makes or, if she says something incendiary that the media ends up slobbering over the next day, it’ll overshadow his speech entirely. Or, actually, I suppose there’s a third option — that this will be as much a response to Ryan as it is to Obama, emphasizing that his plan to cut $60 billion this year (and maybe his vote for TARP?) simply isn’t good enough. She’s handing the media a post-SOTU “GOP divided!” narrative on a silver platter by doing this, but it helps her presidential candidacy among the base, I suppose. And it exacts a little revenge on the caucus after she was passed over for the GOP’s House Conference Chair in favor of Jeb Hensarling. Remember who it was who decided to back Hensarling instead of her? GOP divided!
STFU.
Allahpundit = RINO
I don’t believe that Ryan’s or Bachmann’s speech will over ride each other. There’s only so much time to give the speech so they can key on different things, but things that need to be addressed. We’ll see which way they go.....with or without teleprompters.
I find it interesting that the SOTU is on Groundhog Day this year.
One event features prognostication about future events from a mindless animal, and the other has something to do with a groundhog...

Well, the GOP does have a deep division. The blue-blood country club “elite” RINOs do not like blue-collar conservatives, and they control the party machinery, comprise the bulk of the professional “handlers”, etc. The fact that they refused to be conservative the last time they held power (remember the Bush prescription drug benefit? Compassionate conservatism?) is a good reason not to trust them. The Tea Party needs to continually remind them that either the GOP gets more conservative, or be consigned to electoral oblivion in favor of a more conservative third party. And this is a good way to remind them of exactly that- a warning shot fired right from the outset.
We’ve all heard of the usual names as candidates for 2012 — Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty, etc.
My personal favorite is Michelle Bachmann. I’ll campaign strongly for her if she declares her candidacy.
Rep. Michele Bachmann is scheduled to speak AFTER the GOP response by Rep. Paul Ryan.
"This year, 2011, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union address occur on the same day.
It is an ironic juxtaposition of events; one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication while the other involves a groundhog."
Truer words were never spoken ...... as the saying goes...... :O)
Great Minds think alike...
Cheers!
I thought Groundhog Day was February 2nd.
RE: Rep. Michele Bachmann is scheduled to speak AFTER the GOP response by Rep. Paul Ryan.
The SOTU is broadcast by almost all major channels in the USA ( plus all major cable news networks ).
How many of them broadcast the response and if they do, how many Americans even BOTHER to watch the response?
The Tea Party movement has to stay on the offense.
The RINO establishment plots night and day to betray conservatives. Do not turn your backs on them for a second.
