Spotlight From Glenn Beck Brings a CUNY Professor (Frances Fox Piven) Threats
New York Times ^ | January 21, 2011 | BRIAN STELTER

Posted on 01/22/2011 5:38:16 AM PST by reaganaut1

On his daily radio and television shows, Glenn Beck has elevated once-obscure conservative thinkers onto best-seller lists. Recently, he has elevated a 78-year-old liberal academic to celebrity of a different sort, in a way that some say is endangering her life.

Frances Fox Piven, a City University of New York professor, has been a primary character in Mr. Beck’s warnings about a progressive take-down of America. Ms. Piven, Mr. Beck says, is responsible for a plan to “intentionally collapse our economic system.”

Her name has become a kind of shorthand for “enemy” on Mr. Beck’s Fox News Channel program, which is watched by more than 2 million people, and on one of his Web sites, The Blaze. This week, Mr. Beck suggested on television that she was an enemy of the Constitution.

Never mind that Ms. Piven’s radical plan to help poor people was published 45 years ago, when Mr. Beck was a toddler. Anonymous visitors to his Web site have called for her death, and some, she said, have contacted her directly via e-mail.

In response, a liberal nonprofit group, the Center for Constitutional Rights, wrote to the chairman of Fox News, Roger Ailes, on Thursday to ask him to put a stop to Mr. Beck’s “false accusations” about Ms. Piven.

“Mr. Beck is putting Professor Piven in actual physical danger of a violent response,” the group wrote.

Fox News disagrees. Joel Cheatwood, a senior vice president, said Friday that Mr. Beck would not be ordered to stop talking about Ms. Piven on television. He said Mr. Beck had quoted her accurately and had never threatened her.

“ ‘The Glenn Beck Program,’ probably above and beyond any on television, has denounced violence repeatedly,” Mr. Cheatwood said.

(I base most of my Mormon comments on personal experience since I married one who left the LDS Church but frequently went back)

The deal with that is that some argue that Joe was just making offhand remarks about the future, the Constitution, and salvation and his buddies wove it into a prophecy when that really wan’t Smith’s intention.

Could also be that they knew that Joe was usually drunk (”The Jolly Prophet”) and frequently his mothings were actually whiskey talking.

That’s right-—the teetotalling LDS was founded by a heavy drinker.

At any rate, belief in the “White Horse Prophecy” is not universal among them and is not LDS dogma.

But Beck is right about revolutionists and insidious commies.

He sure is...people just need to learn how to discern facts from BS; regardless of the situation. It's really not that hard...if I felt Beck was trying to 'convert' me; I would change the channel.

When was the Communist Manifesto published?

I usually don't comment on the whole Mormon thing because its unimportant to me unless its the extremists like Warren Jeffs. Otherwise I hold pretty firm to the words of Thomas Jefferson.

I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all.

It must be too hard to understand if it was published THAT long ago!

I may be wrong but I really think Beck sees himself as an instrument of his church’s prophecy.

That is not to say that the dangers he points out aren’t very real in most cases.

And old Joe wasn't bashful about making a quick dollar on the sly.

He and his father were known to be 'work-shy', unless it involved a scheme involving lost treasure.

I have noticed that a few mormon dislikers (won’t use a stronger word, wouldn’t want to offend) cannot keep it out of even news about this jacka$$ marxist teaching in our colleges.. they should give it a rest and post on the Mormons aren’t christian threads...geeze, give it a break.

No! In fact, there is source material from New York state courts showing that Joe was convicted of bunko for engaging in “money digging”(treasure hunting) and “glass-looking.”

Then there is the business about the “angel” Moroni. In actuality, he was probably renegade Baptist preacher Sidney Rigdon who had the education and ability to write the Book of Mormon when Joe was just too unsophisticated for the task.

Once a conman, always a conman.

Oh they have so few straws left, it is the old, STOP IT MOMMY, MAKE IT GO AWAAAAAAYYYY!!! Call the Whaaaaambulance ! Sheesh! Crap!

The next big shooting that will [also] have nothing to do with PAC (Patriotic American Conservatism), will probably be Post-Facto Reichstag Fire-d to death by these most reprehensible pig progressives, the scum of the Republic, with the ultimate revision of FCC laws and Fairness Doctrine, and taking conservatives off the air, maybe even FR offline. We, millions upon millions of us now, many newly awakened, are a non-violent, yet potent political and power threat and they know it.

For the record, I'm not a Mormon 'disliker', in fact when I was a building contractor, the majority of my subs, both in numbers and dollar volume were LDS.

' And they treated me right.(Maybe they knew me and the local Bishop were drinking buddies?)

This goes back to the old saw, “How do you anger a Conservative, lie about him.” or, How do you anger a Liberal, tell the truth about him.”

Gee, I wonder if there exists any real chance for this thread to return to its original topic (that Marxist "tear it down" professor), and not that of sectarian religion and religious/philosophic differences. Just wondering if Freepers can do that on this one??
