The Environmental Protection Agency said Friday that cars and light trucks in the 2001 model year and later could safely use a blend of 15 percent ethanol mixed with gasoline, up from the 10 percent standard now in much of the country. The decision means that about 62 percent of all vehicles can now use the fuel.
But the practical impact of the announcement on the fuel blend, known as E15, was not clear. An announcement in October that cars in the 2007 model year and later could use the blend has so far had little impact on retailers or drivers. A new fuel requires multiple approvals from many agencies. And retailers are typically not set up to offer an additional grade of gasoline at their pumps, meaning that if they wanted to sell E15, they would have to stop selling something else.
The ethanol industry is facing a problem selling its product because overall gasoline sales are down even while its production is up. In addition, while many cars have been produced that can run on an 85 percent ethanol blend, known as E85, very few gasoline retailers outside the Midwest actually sell the fuel. Automakers had expressed concern that the E15 blend could harm older model cars.

Bone to GM and Chrysler to kill older cars and sell new.
It sure wrecks snowblowers after that last blizzard (MN & W. Wi) it was all over the news that was the leading cause of problems for them.
If they start using that E15 garbage around here (and I’m sure they will, as many eco-mentalists as we have in this area), I just have to pray that it doesn’t finish off my 180,000-mile fifteen-year-old 5.2L Dodge V8 before I can afford to replace it. My gas mileage (what little there is of it) is already off because of E10.
I like how the crystal ball-gazers at the EPA just unilaterally decide that a 2001 engine can run on E15, and sod all what the manufacturer might say. Government by experts at its finest.

My dead ‘91 Town Car says this is a lie.
And a local gas station was forced to close down due to all the lawsuits they were slapped with by people whose car engines were ruined by the ethanol in the gas.
Top 3 divisions of NASCAR are going E15 this year - aargh:(
Republicans need to defund the EPA and start dismantling it.

My thought as well. Never mind about the facts just deem it so. Theres a lot of that going on in DC at the moment. Well, we knew libs were delusional preferring to live in a fantasy world.
Corn won’t grow at all on Rocky Top -Dirt’s too rocky by far
That’s why all the folks on Rocky Top

Home sweet home to me
Good ol’ Rocky Top

Corn Growers Lobby pays politicians well.
I guess that's fine if your engine only has to go 500 miles and you have a squadron of medchanics and spares along.
More intentional economic damage on the US from the Lefties
I’m already getting a check engine light (oxygen sensor) every time the season mixture changes. There’s nothing wrong with the sensor, but there is too much oxygen in my exhaust.
Ethanol is an inferior fuel which gives me reduced fuel mileage as well as reduced efficiency (too lean a fuel mixture means that heat energy is being lost in oxygen in exhaust). Democrat idiots.
Bingo. Every couple of years there’s another de facto statute effectively banning a group of perfectly functioning products or making them more expensive. This looks like a slow grab for the wallet drivers that manage to maintain an older, paid-off vehicle.
If the higher ethanol content does just that to older cars I would say that this is deliberate. Kill the cars on the road that are much older, these people will not be able to replace them with the new they offer because they won’t be able to afford it and VWA- LA! All these people are reduced to sporting bicycles like China overnight.
Maybe Congress should issue war bonds again. this time the $ goes to fund bio-fuel research and people like Harkin ,Grassley and Pawlenty can put their money where their big mouths are.
And all these patiotic farmers and farm pimps could invest and become overnight millionaires!!
In a few parts of MN, an increasing number of gasoline retailers are selling their Premium Grade Gasoline Ethanol Free.
The cost is about $0.30 per gallon higher than the ethanol laced Regular Grade.
If the retailers gasoline dispensers have only one hose be sure to pump 2 - 3 gallons into your automobile to empty the dispenser and hose of ethanol gasoline before filling your gas can for the weed eater, chain saw, mower, outboard motor or other small engines.
For each $100 of a repair bill you have to burn over 300 gallons of ethanol gas before the cost of premium is not cost efficient.
This administration has a whole new Department of Dumb Ideas.

and, Ethanol is being subsidized by the Feds to accomplish this. How stupid are we not to be raising some hell about this? I don’t what the rhetoric toned down to a whimper, we’re already here. I want the rhetoric so loud Washington will have to do something about it.
That is NOT what my old. thanks to Obamarx, FORMER Chevrolet dealer told me a couple of months ago. He said to stay away from the E15 and any higher ethanol content.
