Conservatives Rally Around Ricky Gervais
Hollywood Reporter ^ | 1/19/11 | Paul Bond

Delighted at the sight of Gervais belittling Hollywood elitists who they maintain do likewise to them regularly, the right-wing blogosphere lit up with positive reviews, even while more traditional media was critical of Sunday's telecast.

Had Gervais "been as relentless in ripping apart Sarah Palin, her young children, Jesus Christ or George W. Bush, today the comedian would be celebrated as 'edgy' and 'courageous'," noted John Nolte, editor of the website Big Hollywood.

“Most of all I’d like to thank God, for making me an Atheist.” -R. Gervais

Why would someone announcing that he is an atheist be offensive to conservatives? We might not agree with his beliefs but Mr. Gervais is certainly entitled to them.

Personally, if I had known that this was the routine in place for the Golden Globes, I might have bothered to watch it!

If you think about it, that is very funny.

His GG commentary should not have been a surprise to anyone. It seems thin skin is in.

I might’ve watched the Globes had I known he was going to skewer those hypocritical, thin-skinned, self-righteous Hollywood twits.

The silliest thing about this whole hulabaloo is that Gervais’ routine consisted, at heart, of tire, old jokes. Well worded and delivered, perhaps, but old jokes nonetheless.

Charlie Sheen is sleezy? Tom Cruise is gay? Robert Downey, Jr. did drugs? The Sex and the City ladies are old? The fat guy from Lost is fat? How dare he! I’ve never heard such gall. Except, that is, on every episode ever of Leno, Letterman, Conan, The Daily Show, The Soup, etc. Either the golden Globes isn’t the loose, swingin’ get-together we’ve been led to believe, or Hollywood types are remarkably sheltered and ignorant.

Ya. Ricky Gervais isn't going around suing War Memorials or trying to ban "Merry Christmas".

He's an Atheist. I'm not. That's fine.

Also, I enjoyed Gervais bashing Hollywood elites...

“well then for whatever reason Conservatives want to claim him”

Claim him? What is this, whoever has the most souls wins? If so, we’re so far behind in Hollywood that we might as well quit now. Thinking it’s funny that Hollywood was offended and defending Gervais’ routine is not a matter of “claim”-ing him.

I notice they replay these award shows over and over again. This one I have only seen replayed once.

Atheism is at the heart of progressive, liberal , marxist, communist idealogy

Out of all the things that Mr. Gervais said during his work as host, that last line about his thanking God he is an atheist might be the one thing that we might find disagreeable, and all he was doing was giving his own personal opinion. I don't think that line could even be considered "evangelism." Contrast that to the typical Hollywood awards show, in which conservatives are routinely disparaged. From what I read, this delivery was a literal breath of fresh air.

“apparently the cult following around the world”

His cult following thinks he’s funny, not that he’s a role model. Well, maybe some insignificant minority model themselves after him. But that’s probably also true of Steve Urkel and Screech from Saved By the Bell.
