Starbucks Workers Get Holiday Pay, Protest Anyway
1/17/11 at 7:11 PM

For most of us, Martin Luther King Jr. day is considered a holiday. But not for Starbucks workers, who up until this year didn't receive holiday pay for working on MLK Day. The Industrial Workers of the World Starbucks Workers Union spent three years lobbying to get Starbucks employees time and a half on the holiday — and this year they got what they wanted.

And as is often the case, the company was loathe to give the union any credit in adding Martin Luther King Jr. Day to the list of company-approved holidays. Actually, said spokesperson Stacey Krum, “in November we announced we were adding M.L.K. Day as a holiday. It is one of the most requested by our partners.”

But just because the union got their way on MLK Day didn't mean that they were about to give up the fight.

never spend my money there however I have been in with a friend while they get their expensive overpriced coffee and the people working there are always lily white, scruffy looking young kids.

I think on a post I gave the impression that I frequent Starbucks but my comment was only based on observation, when I pass by one or notice them in open places like Barnes and Nobles. I’ve only seen lilly-white employees for the most part, the scruffy young kids as you say.

My son-in-law bought me a regular coffee at a Starbucks once (I had a hard time finding “just coffee”). I couldn’t get over the price but then again, I was weaned on Navy coffee and ol’ coffee pots in LE stations, now that can get pretty STOUT.

Anyway, he was just being kind and wanted to treat me as he doesn’t frequent them either, although I noticed that he could interpret the menu and had to translate it for me...

LOL no impression was given but I do agree with you also on the price, trying to get a normal coffee instead of this flavour crap, mocha, pocha, cappo , toppa bal bal bla crap.

Overpriced, crap coffee where you have to make it yourself with the sugar and cream.

I’ll take dunki donuts anytime.
