Matching hungry Depression-era Americans with farm surpluses motivated the first Federal food stamp program in the 1930s. Today, to remove the stigma of paying at the supermarket with the stamps, some 120 Million Americans get Electronic Benefit Transfer debit cards (EBT) from the renamed Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP).
Applications are pouring in every day as radio and TV ads, paid for with taxpayer funds, inform the world how to get free food.
Since the states administer the program for the Feds, individual states have gotten creative.

"In California, the poor can use the EBT card at the farmers' market, and the flea market, and even dine out. Under a new state law, counties can permit the use of the CalFresh EBT cards at approved restaurants."
grrrrr
One hundred and twenty million people on food stamps? That’s more than 1 out of every 3 Americans. Not sure I believe it.
And here I’m spending $200 a week to fill my fridge with healthy produce and fresh meats. Meanwhile, they’re out there with my tax dollars eating at Chili’s.
*spit*
Yup... max your card for next month’s refill. Who’s asking?
No one wants welfare. But every one needs to eat even in a depression.
In Maryland (ultimate Freak state) the “Freedom” card has been around for years for all sorts of welfare. Freedom to fleece the working taxpayer and freedom to continually vote for DIMs.
You beat me to the math;) Here’s the most recent population clock which supports your statement.
U.S. 311,912,395
That is unbelievable.
Just a traveling along,
Not going no where,
Ive got plenty of time,
Because i,m on welfare,
I,m just having my fun,
While i,m spending your mon.
Living on welfare.
Living on welfare.
“And here Im spending $200 a week to fill my fridge with healthy produce and fresh meats. Meanwhile, theyre out there with my tax dollars eating at Chilis.”
You wish it. It’s your kids and grandkids (and probably beyond) tax dollars.
“One hundred and twenty million people on food stamps? Thats more than 1 out of every 3 Americans. Not sure I believe it.”
I believe when you take into account that only 1 out of 3 of those One hundred and twenty million people are Americans the remainder are illegals and scam artist collecting to resale and/or collecting under multiple names.
In analyzing this from a “Cosmic Battle” viewpoint,
I’ve realized that this is just another aspect of the left’s ideological father’s continuing propensity to take whatever was intended for good and to twist it to something perverted and wicked.
As I said yesterday about SSI, the rules have been INTENTIONALLY manipulated by the left so that those who have legitimate need for the program are denied whilst those who intend on “gaming the system” are given easier access.
Yes, this is INTENTIONAL.
This article from last August puts the number at 40.8 million.

>> Today, to remove the stigma of paying at the supermarket with the stamps
It seems to me that there SHOULD be a “stigma” with being on the dole. In other words, if you feel “stigmatized” by taking welfare maybe you’ll be motivated to get off of welfare. Clearly, if you make it as “cool” as using a credit card, there is NO such motivation not to be on the dole.
In a just world, “food stamps” should be printed on 8 1/2” by 11” paper in flourescent orange, and the supermarket clerk should have to unfold each sheet to scan a bar code. Make it nearly impossible to hide who is using government assistance!
And use them in a restaurant? NO WAY.
(just my two food stamps’ worth)
I suspect that includes dependents. Single mom with five kids gets enrolled in the program, and that counts as six people. I'm mildly surprised the number isn't higher.
“No one wants welfare. But every one needs to eat even in a depression.”
Hmmm, but, should “everyone” eat at the government trough? That’s the question?
But they don’t need to eat in restaurants at many times the cost of grocery shopping
Americans will be happy to get off.... when the politicians do.
No one wants welfare. But every one needs to eat even in a depression.
And eating is one thing, but can,t they at least cook their own food?
If they can not eat beans and potatoes and cook them theirselves they need to get real hungry.
And all you have to do is look at the fatties to see they may not need to eat for at least a few months.
The census of 300million includes children.
That still suggests 1/3 of all living humans in the US are eating food provided by the other 2/3.
The scheme is designed to lure food stamp recipients to spend all their allowance in a month. And who dines out in restaurants several times a week? Stupid, stupid, stupid!
A week’s worth of frozen gourmet food licensed by those same restaurants is cheaper than dining out in them for one night.
