It’s actually just Boston as it turns out. As is sadly unsurprising, our foreign source is more correct than any number of U.S. news sources by noting it is a “Boston state census” not the U.S. Census. Although that is a contradictory term, it’s not flat-out wrong.

BTW here’s the form, it asks for number of dogs at the bottom. It’s her own fault IMO for putting the name of the pet — and the family’s last name, per another article — in the area with the other family members.

Racism is Alive in the Boston Census

February 5th, 2009

You would think that in one of the most progressive cities, in one of the most progressive states in the US that racism is still well and alive. Even in 2009, with a Black president, it still persists even in the government!

Today, I received this letter from the City of Boston’s Census. Everything was great until I got to the bottom. It wants to know how many dogs I have. Not pets, not things that walk on 4 legs, dogs. I don’t have a dog, I have a cat. She’s a good cat. I showed this to her, and she is hurt to know that even today she’s being discrimnated against. Jade loves everyone!

Jade is a cat. She’s also black, and overweight so not only does she have the stigma of being ‘unlucky’, she has to shop in the plus section and can’t wear the ‘standard’ sizes of cat harnesses. And some people in society judge her for her weight. She said that its genetic and her mom had the same problem.

But isn’t Jade equal to a dog and deserve the recognition from the state government? Why can’t she drink from the dog fountains at the park without harassment from dogs?

At the very least, Jade wants to be counted by the City of Boston as a pet that is at least equal to a dog. She actually thinks she is better than a dog, but we’re not doing to go there. Jade is sad and disapointed. She will be writing a letter to the mayor shortly.

Life imitates Monty Python:

Man in Raincoat: I’d like to buy a cat license.

Clerk: Sir there is no such thing as a cat license.

Man: Then how do you explain this cat license application?

Clerk: This is a dog license application. You’ve crossed out dog and written cat.

Call the Mayors or the City Managers Office and tell them what’s happening. They may just connect you with a supervisor who can tell you exactly what to do.

It might just be easier to claim that the cat is a member of the Feline Informed Jury Association and believes in jury nullification and have her tossed out in voir dire.

Why? Because she got the long-form and decided to comply with the question that asked the householder to list pets rather than taking the FReeper position that only the question need to to count the number of persons living at the address was Constitutionally permissible.

The story makes it clear the woman did not list the cat as a person residing at the given address, but as a pet in the question asking about pets. Some idiot government clerk recorded the response as indicating a person. (Maybe a ‘Rat operative, systematically listing all pets as persons to keep Massachusetts from losing House seats and electoral votes—bears investigation.)

Anna wrote her Sal's name under 'pets' on the last census - she crossed out 'dogs' and said he was a cat.

Believe me, Sal would be a distinct improvement over some of the creatures I have seen on potential jury panels.

The pet owner must have pulled some stunt for it to have gotten on the court’s list of potential jurors.

I'm thinking the same thing. Check and see if ACORN registered the cat to vote. ;~))
