Hariri tribunal: UN prosecutor issues sealed indictment
BBC News ^ | 1/17/11 | BBC

The UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon says its prosecutor has issued indictments for the 2005 murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The names of the accused remain confidential for now, but are widely believed to include members of the armed Shia group Hezbollah.

A pre-trial judge now decides whether to issue warrants.

Last week, Hezbollah and its allies brought down Lebanon's government in a dispute over the tribunal.

The group, which denies any role in the killing, has dismissed the tribunal as a US and Israeli plot that is designed to discredit it.

It has demanded that Lebanon cease all co-operation with the court and cut off its funding.

Amid the political crisis, talks on naming a new prime minister have been postponed until next week.

Sealed indictment

“The prosecutor of the tribunal [Daniel Bellemare] has submitted an indictment and supporting materials to the pre-trial judge [Daniel Fransen],” the court said in a statement on its website. http://www.stl-tsl.org/sid/239

The contents of the indictment will remain confidential at this stage, it added.

...

We’ll see how many Judges get blown up before this one actually goes to “trial”.

“On 13 December 2005, the Government of the Republic of Lebanon requested the United Nations to establish a tribunal of an international character to try all those who are alleged responsible for the attack of 14 February 2005 in Beirut that killed the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 22 others. Pursuant to Security Council resolution 1664 (2006), the United Nations and the Lebanese Republic negotiated an agreement on the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Further to Security Council resolution 1757(2007) of 30 May 2007, the provisions of the document annexed to it and the Statute of the Special Tribunal there to attached, entered into force on 10 June 2007. “

Wow. Who knew there would be trouble with Hezbollah operating at will in Lebanon, even becoming a part of the government?

It has it’s own army firmly entrenched in the South. And the government for the most part plays nice-nice with it.

I guess I shouldn’t get too self-righteous, since we have the U. S. arm of Hezbollah (the Democrats) operating freely in the U. S., destroying our nation at will.

With the UN involved, the indictment will probably be against an Israeli.

UN officials have said that the identity of the suspects will not be made public until Judge Fransen endorses the draft indictments and issues warrants - a process could take two to three months.

Two to Three months?????

How long does it take to sign a few papers ????

I’ve been listening to an audio of “The Complete Infidels Guide to the Koran” and can see no way out of the Islamist situation except toatal surrender or total war. So far it appears that the West has oppted for surrender by small progressive steps.

:’) Well, “rockets’ red glare” does come to mind. The jihadists have had more than one Hizzie fit over this report, and it hasn’t even been released. If the Iranian foreign proxies in Lebanon don’t restart the Lebanese civil war — bringing it out of its long hudna slumber — it’ll be surprising, at least.

When he’s done plundering the nation’s resources, Obama will turn us over to our enemies - most of whom are in league with jihadists.

Since I am against the UN having legal power over US citizens and leaders, I am against the UN messing in the business Of Lebanon and every other country. The UN should die.
