Bush 41 to endorse Roger Williams
Austin American-Statesman ^ | 17 January 2011 | Jason Embry

Former President George H.W. Bush will endorse Republican Roger Williams this afternoon for the U.S. Senate seat that Kay Bailey Hutchison now holds.

The race to succeed Hutchison, who is not seeking re-election, has drawn interest from a number of Republicans, including railroad commissioners Elizabeth Ames Jones and Michael Williams. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is also considering a run.

Roger Williams is a Weatherford car dealer and former Texas secretary of state who was a major Republican donor before he was a candidate.

The Bush endorsement could give his campaign a nice boost, particularly since the field is crowded and Williams doesn’t have the statewide name recognition of someone like Dewhurst, who has held statewide office since 1999. A high-profile endorsement can be particularly helpful early in a campaign as a candidate tries to build momentum and attract donors.

Texas has the most left-leaning Republican Senators in the country (Yes, including Maine) Will this be more of the same?

Do you just make stuff like that up?

To be perfectly honest, thanks to the Bush history of pro-amnesty and pro-big spending, a Bush endorsement is much, much more of an “anti-endorsement” to me.

I remember reading an article yesterday that Jim DeMint was supporting someone in that Texas race. Can’t remember who it is, but I don’t imagine it is this Bush favorite...

DeMint considering Michael Williams or Ted Cruz for TX Senate

DeMint Endorsed Michael Williams in 2009 (if KBH had resigned)

Sen. Jim DeMint, the conservative king-maker who initally backed Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams to fill Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s Senate seat, is now openly testing the reception for other candidates.

Huh?

It's politico; 'nuff said.

DeMint's backing of Michael Williams was in '09 if KBH had resigned her seat to run for Gov. She didn't. This '11 Senate race is a new race and DeMint is assessing whether Michael Williams, whom he still loves, is the best candidate. We'll know soon.

I don’t like this one bit. How sneaky of the Republicans to run someone that has the same last name as Michael Williams.

I don't like either of our Texas senators, but this is a bit of a stretch, isn't it?

Anyway, I'm delighted that KBH is finally going to step down and I fervently hope we can get a true conservative in her place.

I like what I see of Michael Williams so far.

There are so many good conservatives in Texas like John Culberson or Ted Poe that I could also get enthusiastic about.

I don’t remember this guy. I like Greg Abbott (atty general) or Dewhurst, but at this point don’t have a candidate. I can see our Governor Rick Perry getting into the mix, since he is already in his third term as governor and I can’t seem him running for President. That would be ironic as KBH just ran against him for Governor.

After last year's session, Cornyn rushed out and gave his first interview to the Huffington Post and told them that Obamacare was mostly great, the GOP just wanted to change it 5%. Would any conservative do that? Would even a moderate make the Huffington Post they're first stop? NO! He is in cahoots with them.

Not to mention his top priorities as head of the NRSC his top support went to Spector, Murkowski, and Crist.
