Two school systems in Georgia will resume classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to make up for last weeks snow day, drawing much criticism from the NAACP.
Edward DuBose, president of the Georgia State NAACP Chapter, told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that he is shocked that Fannin and Gilmer counties would rise to this level of disrespect to King.
The whole state of Georgia should be embarrassed, actually, by the action of both counties, DuBose said. You cant help but to come to the conclusion that the population of his county is having some bearing on the leadership.
While Gilmer County Superintendent Bryan Dorsey said he certainly understands the criticism, he claims that school officials didnt have much of a choice. Both counties have already lost nine school days, four before Christmas and five last week.
Its tough when people dont realize that since Dec. 2 weve only had kids in school two whole days and two half days, Dorsey said. Since Dec. 10 weve almost had a small summer break already.
DuBose said he hopes the counties will reconsider their decision to hold classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Dorsey reiterated that the schools werent purposely doing this to slight the holiday.
Some people have characterized it as not honoring Martin Luther King, Dorsey said. We certainly dont intend it to be that way, no more than we intended not to honor our presidents on the presidents holiday that we had to take back [due to prior snow days].
I’m totally sick of having a racially motivated, exclusionary holiday.
I’m still trying to figure out why we have a Martin Luther King Holiday to start with...
LMAO @ racist morons using racism to promote racism.
No complaints about giving up Presidents’ Day, of course.
Remember that Atlanta has a Cynthia Mckinney Boulevard
Of course the last think MLK would want is for black kids to be educated.
Good comment - insightful. I mean, why not just replace the 4th of July ?
On ESPN, it’s been MLK day EVERYDAY for the past 2 weeks.
If MLK was alive today, I think he would say, “Send the kids to school!”. The NAACP is once again choosing symbolism over reality. The kids have to go to school a certain number of days and it sounds like the school administration is doing what it can to make up the days prior to the summer release. Personally, I would rather them trim a day here and there rather than have my kids go to school till July. IMHO
We must honor the communist.
“Im totally sick of having a racially motivated, exclusionary holiday.”
No other American has his or her own day as a national holiday. Hell, Washington and Lincoln no longer have their own days, but are lumped together on President’s Day. That a minor player in American history should have his own day — and, let’s be candid here: It is because of his race — is an absurdity. A Jonas Salk Day would make more sense than MLK Day, as would a Thomas Edison Day.
We should have one day set aside as American Heroes Day.
I agree. As harsh as it sounds being shot does much for ones image. MLK gave some fantastic speeches to be sure but the Kennedy admin was investigating him for unAmerican activities. He was not well liked as I remember.
No learning, no work...because the poor, the welfare, the section 8, the ‘disabled’, the prisoners, parole, probation...God forbid they get a extra day of schooling, or work...
I’ve hoisted my stars and bars flag — I’m celebrating Robert E. Lee’s birthday this week!
If Dr. King wanted anything, it would be for children to be educated.
NAACP...kiss my butt.
Wait until the blacks start agitating for a "Barack Obama Holiday".
You know it's coming.
Hey, both of them got three out of four words correct, didn’t they? That’s a passing grade, right?
“Wait until the blacks start agitating for a “Barack Obama Holiday”.
You know it’s coming.”
Yep, and most likely it will be made a reality.
